Temp gauge

After doing a 1 year back search with no luck need help. Here's problem--(new gauge, new sender, wire check to ing. and sender-OK)-after starting engine gauge will slowing go to full scale before engine is warm. ( wire not grounded because it will stay put when engine is cold when you turn on switch--only starts to move when engine is running.) 71 manual says sender will not read correct if coolent is not protected to 0* or below--anyone every hear of this? --ours is.

This is what I would do because I suspect the sending unit. Obtain the ohm reading specification for the sending unit, pull the unit, heat it to 212 degrees and measure the ohm reading you get. Compare the actual vs specified values. (They should be close). The gauge moves in relation to the signal that the sending unit sends to it and it works by increasing the ground.

If the unit is putting out the right value, then the gauge is at fault.

If someone doe not post the values, I will try to get them for you.

Jim

PS: Nice truck!

gauge

Thanks guys for the replies. 4X4 I have the values--I got them from my parts man as I drove down to work on the truck (not mine). Will try the ohm test tomorrow. Looked at another new one and it is the same as we have. Today I hooked up another gauge (he had a extra dash cluster) out side of car and used the sender in engine--did the same thing. This leads me to think that you are right about the sender. If you come up with anything else let me know. Thanks again.

gauge

Hey 4X4 you were right!--bad "new" sender. Checked extra gauge on my truck--worked. So installed another new one --works great . Thanks for the help.
