replacing door locks??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I need to replace the locks on my truck. the driver's side lock is dead. anything that will fit in the lock, even by a couple mm's will turn and unlock it.

i'm trying to beef up the security for college soon. the alarm is good, but the door luck still needs fixed.

how do i go about changing the locks out and where would i get replacement ones at?

i have found that most auto part stores like pep boys have cylinders. its real easy all ya need is a large screwdriver and you can reach in there and pop out the C style clips that hold them to the door skin then ya have a little awl or small flathead screwdriver that seperates the clip that holds the lock rod to the end of the lock cylinder. in short the hardest part of the whole thing is taking off the door panel.
I used to have an extra set laying around but i lost em in the mess.
Also almost any GM car lock cylinder wwill fit you may just have to change off the linkage int he back which is also easy enough just taking off a clip

Yeah they tend to do that... I have an alarm for that reason. When I get around to fixing all the lock cylinders (all of them including the ignition are screwed up somehow) I'll fix it. It is very simple. Pop the rusted c-clip off and pull out. Reverse to reinstall!

Hey ocbaud, I just did this a few weeks ago after someone tried to break-in my truck with a screwdriver. The other guys are right. The hardest part is getting the door panel off. Also, the c-clip will pop off so don't drop inside the door. Happened to me and I had to use a magnet to get it out. I got my lock cylinders at NAPA for $34 for a set.

I replaced the locks in my 85 about 3 months ago. IT was a pretty simple swap. I think I gave 16 for the set at O'reily's

The locks might help, but anybody that strong enough to pick up a rock can still get in. Insurance, Insurance, Insurance. Good luck with the lock change out though.

to prevent someone using the screwdriver trick you can rivet these pieces they make to your door skin which covers over the lock cylinder, but yet ive seen people pry those out to do the screwdriver trick... the thing is if they really want the truck they will get it.
