alternator wire ???

On my 70 that i just bought i had to extend the alternator harness to work with a pass. side alternator. what does this black wire do? i got the other three hooked up as they should be but im lost for this one.

another question, what would cause the gas guage to be out of phase. meaning that when i put the cluster back in the dash my guage reads well beyond full. thanks for the help

The black wire shown is a ground wire and is probably not needed.

On your gas gauge, there are a couple of possibilities, 1) broken/disconnected
wire from sending unit or 2) bad sending unit, (electrical or stuck).
