am/fm radio swap

I want a stock looking am/fm radio for my '70. I can't afford the correct one. Will 73-87 fit with no mods, and will 67-72 knobs fit on the 73-87 radio? I need fm for my sony 10 disc.

No. (the knobs will fit, but it won't fit in the dash) I just tried that this week. I got an AM/FM from the salvage yard, tested it on the bench. It works great. Removed the glove box liner and.....F-word....it will not fit. It is too deep front to back. It hits the inside of the cowl (under the wiper motor) and will not allow enough play to get the shafts in the holes. I even went as far as to shorten the shafts and it is still a no-go. Also, the shafts are not in the center of the holes (if you hold it up to the outside of the dash for comparison). My plan to work around this is to:

1) Buy the correct am/fm for these years of trucks
2) Cut the dash out, install the radio, then weld it back in (cutting under the dash pad and behind the cluster/glovebox) - This would be way too much work, but it would solve the issue for the moment.
