Roller Rocker Questions
I debating about replacing my regular rockers with roller rockers or roller tip rockers. My engine curently runs about 300 hp and I'm looking for all the low dollar HP I can find. If I use roller rockers do I need to use the tall valve covers? Running about .480 lift and have been told the if you are runnning less than .500 lift that roller rockers would not be of real benifit, but roller tip rockers would be worthwhile. Need you guys opinions. Thanks

i was gonna but roller rockers for my BB but with my AC and all i dont have room for the tall valve covers and i think on a SB (assuming you have one) you need the tall ones too. i dont know how much HP you'll actually get out of the swap but i do say with the new roller tips the engine seems more fluent in the power, less snap to the motor when it wakes up, ya understand? i'd say get some good steel roller tip rockers as i've heard the full roller ones go out in 20k miles anyways. just my 2Cents

i put some of comp cams roller tip rockers on mine. there just like stock just with a roller tip. get them cause they can add power and still use stock height valve covers plus they are a lot easier on your valve guides.

Well, roller rockers are not nessasarily low buck. I would not purchase anything less than a full quality rocker, read:Crane or Harland Sharpe etc. Otherwise the chance of rocker failure increases running a cheaper roller, and that could mean disaster when it fails.
You will not really see any HP gains just from changing from a stock rocker to a full roller (maybe 5HP your application), except from freeing up some friction and slightly cooler oil temps. The HP is usually made from the more accurate rocker ratio than the roller itself in most mild applications. Stock GM rockers are not the most accurate in this aspect. With only 480 lift, I would rather see you purchase the long slot Crane stamped rockers (very accurate) and put your money elsewhere like into the exhaust or fuel/ignition systems, this will gain you more HP and a quicker truck, torque increases. Just my $.02
