Ebay score ! or a hitherto Ford guy buys his dream C20

I hope gloating is allowed here ?
I just picked up my baby and wanted to show you the source of all the stuipd newbie questions I'll be asking.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWN%3AIT

I have ALWAYS wanted a 71 or 72 3/4 ton LWB 4x4 and when I saw this I had to have it, even with the ride I think I got a pretty decent deal, it's way better than the description and pictures would lead you to believe... dead nutz straight, solid, interior is CLEAN OMG I am one happy chevy owning guy

Stupid question one if I want a limited slip should I ditch this Eaton rear, if so what is a good donor for a whole rear that'll bolt in with the least drama (maybe a nice FF 14 bolt from a later 70's truck ?)?

I'd be gloating too. That's a solid truck and a good deal. Congrats!

Told you I was a newbie.
I thought I read the perfectly round housing with 10 cover bolts was the Eaton ? perhaps a picture...

Nice! I noticed that the guy gave the "old" distributer to you. I am doing a frame off resore back to original. You would'nt want to trade some cash for a good distributer would ya? BYE THE WAY... rear end is Dana.

Springbear,
Sure if you don't mind my not wanting to box and ship for a few weeks, bit crazy around here having just got married wife switching jobs etc.. (new wife saw truck and said " that's cool I can see that lifted running fresh colors and me cruising with you" there IS a God !!!!!)
PO tossed in the original distributor, air cleaner and some other bits if any of it will help you they are yours for the freight and a few bucks I'll never use them I plan to do impure things to mine... have headers and lift kit sitting here, agonizing over what wheels to use, some day when the 350 is tired.....

Here is more truck porno if anyone is interested

Brian

I'll probably start a thread in the parts board in a minute for the things I'm looking for.

Why? I thought the dana 60 was mostly a GMC and BB 2wd truck thing.

You can get a used detroit locker for the eaton if you look hard enough, but unfortunately tractech doesn't make them any more. I bought a complete axle with locker for $100, just had to make a short afternoon trip across the state line to PA.

EDIT: hey, you're from Ohio too...that is one nice truck!

The vast majority of Chevy 3/4 ton trucks, 2wd and 4wd, that i have seen have had Eaton rears. GMC's however usually used the Dana rears.

I'd keep the Eaton. Strong rearend, although hard to find parts for.

The vast majority of trucks, Chevy and GMC had Eaton rears up until late 68. One tons up until 70. I have never seen(not that it doesnt exist) a truck of either make past 70 that had a Eaton rear factory. I have had a couple 68 Chevy trucks with factory Dana rears. Guess it depended on what factory they came from.

Either way its a sweet truck for the money. Nice to see decent Ebay deals.

Leave it to me to find one that is wrong
I assume there should have been a tag on the axle from the factory, if it's still there I wonder would it help verify that it was built that way or if someone swapped it later ?

Assuming even though it's not broken that I wanted to swap in a 14 bolt what would a good donor truck be ?

Thanks for making a newbie feel welcome

Any 1973 and up one ton truck, 2 or 4wd, will have a 14 bolt that will be a direct swap.

My H052 has a tag attached to one of the pinion bolts, right by the yoke, but its unreadable. I dont know if it had the gear ratio or was for the No-Spin. The H072 centersection I just bought has the gear ratio stamped into the 3rd member (well, 7/36 which I assumed meant 7 pinion and 36 ring teeth, which = 5.14). The H052 is too rusty to discern any stamps or markings.

1971 3/4T 4x4 should have the Eaton.
1972 3/4T 4x4 should have the Dana 60 axle.

The only bummer you will have with the Eaton, is that in 1971, the 4x4 model had a different size brake drum which are nearly impossible to find.

I'ld keep the Eaton, find a 3rd member with a locker and keep it all stock. If you need brake drums, I'ld swap out the hub/drum/backing plate from a 2WD setup.
