Replacing Emergency Brake Cables - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My local auto parts store only carries the rear cables (left and right).

1) Is that all I need to get my emergency brake working again?

2) Do I need the front as well?

3) If I do, is the front cable a dealer-only part?

I am going to attempt to do these this weekend, so thanks for your help.

1) Not really sure, depends what's wrong with them. It could just be an adjustment...

2) Same deal. If its binding up, then replace it too. Check it when the rears are disconnected and you will know right away. Be under the car (with gloves on) have someone in the car work the pedal back and forth and see if the cable is moving freely.

3) I'm pretty sure you can get the front cable at Napa. I bought mine from my local AC Delco dealer...

I already tried adjusting it.

There is too much cable at the pedal (loose pedal) but the rear is super tight, almost locked up, so I had to back it off.

Anyone? I want to try and fix it this weekend (while I have help), so your advice would be very appreciated.

It sounds like your front cable might be hanging up. Since the front cable is where the adjustment is, replacing it makes adjusting them much easier. I got the rear cables at Car Quest and the front cable from Napa when I replaced mine 2 yrs ago. I use the E-Brake every time I park the truck to keep it loose and even with the snow, salt, mud and dirt it continues to work perfectly.
