cab title
HI all,,,may sound like a dumb question but it has got me wondering..I have a truck which i have owned for 3 year's...decided to tear it down and rebuild..BOUGHT another cab for it since mine was shot, but then i started thinking about a title..I called my local title office and they said contact highway patrol office monday morning because they were not sure...MY question is how does that work?? IS it different in each state,or the same everywhere??? IS the cab titled or the truck it self??...WAS just curious how it is other place's since the title office didn't give me an answer... THANK'S..

I know in CA, the title must match the VIN# on the cab. I would think most states are this way.

Yeah in louisiana if the cab title is different from the rest of the truck, it ain't allowed. I know cause my uncle has an AWESOME old ford pickup (yeah, i know) that the bed doesn't match the cab so they wouldn't register it. Stupid rule IMO, but, ya know...

what year is your truck? if you have an older model where the vin tag is located on the door pillar you can simply take your old vin tag and set it on the new cab with the rivets you can buy from one of the sites this board has recommended( do a search for cab rivets) If your truck is a newer model with it on the dash board you can still do that. but the only way you can access the rivets is to remove the windshield. You have to be extra careful when you do this as not to damage the vin tag from your truck.
IN SOME STATES this may be illegal as it could be considered a "tag job" but if you legitimately bought the cab and have paperwork to back this all up you should be ok if its ever discovered. The other thing you can do is to tkae all your paperwork and go to your state police with the truck and get assigned a new vin number. In some stated this makes the vehicle BRAND NEW and then you have to pass emmissions for that year. Either way a cab swap is a hassle
