Q's on 82 GMC 6000 and 366 v8

Its an 82 GMC 6000
vin 1GDE6D1B7CV571872
according to the RPO list its got a 366ci V8 and a SM465 tranny. I didn't pop open the hood because I didn't have time. On to the questions
What is a 366? By that I mean is it a bored or stroked 350 or something else entirely? Is it any good as far and engines go?
Basically I've got this 6000 at my disposal to pull parts from for my 76. It was parked maybe a year ago, but it still runs. I doubt much will transplant but the door panels seem to be the same size, and i'm sure misc others bits can transfer.

Thanks ahead of time for any info on 366's?

68-90 366 Chevy 6.0 3.938 Truck, HD, w/high energy ignition, small port, 2 piece rear seal, w/A.C. boss, C50-C70 series, not for use in Car or light Truck. Got this info off of another site. I imagine the engine could be made to work in a light duty truck. I think alot of the interior pieces are interchangeable as well. Let this post ride for a couple of days. There are guys on this board who have incredible knowledge of these types of things. Hope this gets you off to a good start. Good luck.
PS: The gauges won't swap because your 76 is amp and the 82 is volt

The 366 is actually a big block, a tall-deck big truck specific engine.

Thanks for that info. I did a bunch of searches but couldn't narrow anything down on the 366. I didn't even think about the system being in amp as apposted to volt. I even looked at the gauges as I jumped out of the cab. I guess I figured since it was post-75 it would be volt. Hopefully, if all info points to good, I'd like to pull the block and all and either use as is or atleast have it as a useable core to build up something later. Again I appreciate the info.

the 366 is pretty much junk imo, its a tall deck big block, but its a small engine of only 366, its small cubes mean small power, but im shure you could probally build one up, i just wouldn't bother with it, id just as well leave the 366 alone and upgrade to a real big block, like a 454 or a tall deck 427. just my 2 cents

In an effort to help me better understand this particular vs. of engine, whats "tall deck" mean? I've only recently heard of the term tall deck (via this board). I know what the deck of an engine is so is it really just the obvious of having a taller deck than a typical block? And since the 366 is a BB then IF it were to be used in the location of a previous 350 SB then there would need to be motor mount changes, etc etc etc yes?

it has a talldeck because of a 4th ring, the tall deck means that the block itself is taller, about 1inch i belive, and as far as swamping in a bb from a sb, u don't need to change the motor mounts, just need new brakets, the radiator may or may not work, i've done a sb to bb swap, easy as pie

Some more questions I came up with. Are all BB's considered tall decks, or are there standard BB's and Tall Deck BB's? I assume the 4th ring is another compression ring?

i don't remeber if the 4th ring is a compresion or not, i think it is, there standard deck BBs, which are very very common, and to make matters worse there is a Tall and short deck 427, the tall decks are alot rarer but they can handle huge strokes so u can get a lot of cubes, the more cubes the better

The 366 was made just strictly to be a truck engine, they are capable of running 6000RPM in a stock form and if you have ever driven a farm truck with one in there you'll know what I mean. They like to run fast. Personally I think they would make a heck of a pickup engine, the only trouble is accessories from the other big blocks will not fit because of the tall deck height.

we had one in an old 67-72 era milk truck we used to haul water to our sprayer with. it would scream, my granpa would race my dad with that old tank half full of water... but my grandpa was one of a kind. personally if i was building a tall deck i would go with the 427. there are performance parts available, just higher cost. the difference between a tall deck and standatd is .4 inches i beleive standard is 9.8 inches crank centerline to the deck and tall deck is 10.2

Cool thanks for all the info guys. Sounds like its not quite worth it to move to a 366 Tall Deck from a standard 350. I'll see if I can sell it for them. Thanks again.
