The rearend went out of dads 72 yesterday,and so he pulled the 3rd member from a 76,and bolted the ring gear up,and bolted it right in.Even has the same spline axels,and ect.
The back brakes are an inch maybe an inch and a half wider than the ones on the 72 though.Would they also fit,using the backing plates from the 76,or would I have to use the axels too?If I have to use the axels they may be too long which would make the whole deal not worth it for no more gain than I would get .
How much of a difference would there actually be,would it be worth it at all?

.. I PUT THE REAR BRAKE ASSY. INC. THE BACKING PLATE OFF OF A 75 TRUCK ON A 72 12 BOLT. IT WAS ABOUT 3/4 OR 1" WIDER SEEMS TO ME. IT'S A WORTH WILE UPDATE AS IT GIVES YOU A WHOLE LOT MORE SURFACE AREA ON THE REAR DRUMS.

Did you use the axels from the 75,or the 72 when you swapped it out?

I believe the axles are the same length, the difference in the backing plates allows the use of the wider shoes.

BRAINCHILD .. THE ONLY THING I USED OFF THE 75 WAS THE BRAKE ASSY. FROM THE BACKING PLATES OUT TO & INCLUDING THE DRUMS.
