Buy local. You want to have a good relationship with your local guy in case the machine ever needs service work. If you buy mail order, they won't be too anxious to fix your stuff since you didn't buy it from them.

Shop around your local places until you find one that makes you feel good. I just bought a 2500 dollar Miller Bobcat welder at my local supply. They were priced the same as mail order and I got to support a local business too.

Great advice. I, too, found the local welder's supply outfit really knew what they were talking about and which machines held up with little or no repair actions needed. Plus, with the initial purchase, there's a good chance they'll discount or throw in a few items. Welding related, one of the best tips I got was about which plasma cutter tips work best. The difference was astounding. I never would have heard about it otherwise. Also, look to your local agricultural equipment fairs. The local welding shops may each have a booth and give demonstrations of their best stuff.

I guess you are right. I have a relationship with the local shop already. I had them fab me a bracket to mount my 12V winch on a receiver hitch. They remember me because they had never done one like it before. Their quote on the Millermatic 135 was $545, (only a few bucks higher than eBay), he asked good questions about what I wanted the MIG for, then suggested this one..instead of trying to soak me for a high dollar rig. I figure if I buy from them, then they'll give me good deals if I have something HEAVY to fab, that my machine can't handle.

It sounds like you have a straight shooter there.

By the way, I hope I don't alienate half the people on here, but Miller welders are the best money can buy. I say that with some experience, I make money building stuff with mine.

To put it into size prospective, that's in the bed of a full size truck. You move it with a front end loader, forklift, or crane.

I just bought a lincoln 135 for 425.00. It is a recondition model with the full warrenty. It looks brand new. I bought it from my local airgas co.

I totally agree about getting the welder from your shop. My local shop remembers me, and they are some great guys there. If it breaks, or I need something for it, I know I can count on them to get me straight, rather than dealing with people that I don't know and who don't realyl give a rip about me or my business.

That said, I got my Millermatic 175 from my local shop for around 680 I think, it was a little more than what I would have paid online, but support your local guys, once they go out of business, we all will be SOL to get gas/supplies etc.
