My '69 K-5 was doing something similar. It would die when it got hot. After rebuilding the carb, new cap, rotor, control module, wires, and finally a complete distributor, I check out the ignition switch. The wires going to the switch were fried and they would heat up and loose connection. I put in a new switch and rewired under the dash (it was a complete mess) and it solved the problem.

Could very well be the coil, I've seen it happen before on older vehicles. Had it happen on my 68 F100, and on my friends 78 Dodge....it's very possible, and I'd imagine there's a way to check the coil....someone here has to know.

Normally the control module in the distributor will never work again if it fails. Sounds more like a coil, or possibly the wires like he said. Coils aren't that expensive and may be worth the peace of mind to shotgun it.

I HAD A BAD IGNITION MODULE THAT WOULD DO JUST THAT TO ME. IT DIDN'T HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, JUST AT THE MOST INOPERTOON TIMES, LIKE WHEN I WAS ON THE WAY TO PICK UP A GIRL FOR A DATE, OR SOME OTHER APOINTMENT. THE D@MB THING SEEMED TO KNOW WHEN I WAS IN NO HURRY TO GET WHERE I WAS GOING, A ACT JUST FINE. AFTER I'D LET IT SIT,& CUSS AT IT FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES, IT WOULD START RIGHT UP LIKE NOTHING WAS EVER WRONG. I THOUGHT THE SAME THING. COILS & ING. MOD.S WORK ALL THE TIME, OR NOT AT ALL. QUITE A BIT OF AGGREVATION FOR A $7.00 PART.

I have seen a fuel filter do this.Run for a while, then the debris cloggs the filter
. Once the vehicle isnt running the debris falls to the bottom of the filter. then t will run again for a while and so on and so on............ ------------------ 1970 short bed fleetside

Thanks to the replys... here is another question. The truck (94 chevy) turns on and it will stay on.. as soon as I put it in dive i will go around the block and when i come to a stop it will die on me. It takes a while then it will start again. i had it running longer than 5 min parked and it was ok..
thx 68man |
