Ugly truck goes to Maaco tomorrow

Well I am taking the ugly truck to Maaco tomorrow to get painted. Right now the cab and bed are different colors and the HOA will have a fit if I dont get it painted. It's just a work truck but hopefully it doesnt turn out worse than it is now Anybody have a good experience with them?

I had my first car painted by them when I was sixteen. They did a decent job, but taped over everything they didn't want to paint...which isn't the ideal way to paint a car...but it is the cheapest. If I were you, I would remove as much trim, moulding, and stuff like that prior to bringing the truck to them, then reinstall it when you get it back. This will give you a better paint job, and hopefully one that will last longer.

Here is a pic of my Maaco painted 82 Olds back in 1991.

Adam, how do you get your hood open with the tube grill? Did someone install a inside hood release on the truck at one point in time? As far as I know, all '73 models had the external latch only.

It still has the external latch, it's kind of a pain (literally it hurts like hell squeezing your hand in there) but it opens just fine.

you must live in a nice neighborhood, i had an 83 cutlass that we cut the roof off of and spray painted and covered with stickers and kicked in all the body panels, and didn't get any complaints when it was parked out front for a while, lol

I had the MAACO in Alabama paint my Mom's car about 2 years ago. It was a 87 Cutlass RWD, with faded grey paint. The car turned out GREAT! It had some orange peel in it, but looked like a factory job. I checked in on it while it was getting prepped and sanded, looked like they were doing a good job. David

like they said...remove trim and stuff on your own...i've heard you should wet sand it yourself. a lot of shops like maaco just use thinner to wipe down the car and spray it. never even sand it...just a thought.

Yep. I would sand it, remove chrome, and tape it myself. Don't leave anything for them except for spraying the paint. If you do all the prep work it will probably turn out pretty nice.

What you get probably varies by where and when it gets done, but I used to have a Cutlass that the previous owners (friend's mom) had painted at Maaco. The paint looked pretty good, but most of it blew off the driver's door when I washed it at a car wash with good water pressure. The paint underneath was still shiny (as in never sanded), and the same color, so it wasn't real noticeable.

How come everyone owned a Cutlass previously? Is this some unwritten rule to be a member here?

I had a 78 cutlass supreme nice loking and riding car. Certianly better looking body style then the 78 monte carlo. About a year before I got rid of it I had maaco paint it. You get what you pay for. For some applications maaco is a great way to go.the late 70s and early 80s olds cutlass was the best selling car in america. now its out of bussiness.

lol...my friend inherited his grandfather's '71 cutlass convertible when we were in high school. his grandfather had it painted at maaco recently before he died, then the car sat in a barn for a few years. I can't believe how bad the paint job is

The car was originally a gold color and it was re-painted black (my friend says it was because his grandfather thought it was ugly, not that it needed it). My buddy worked the car into a DD and soon the paint started coming off. Flaking badly on the hood and trunk, same as Slonaker...when he hit it with the pressure washer, it came off real easy. Then one day we noticed the trunk looked odd...turns out whoever did the paint ing painted over some of the OLDSMOBILE letters on the trunk lid and painted the chrome trim around the trunk.
I hope this doesnt happen to you.
