Hand throttle

Does anyone know how and where the cable for a 67-70 hand throttle is mounted as it passes through the firewall?

what is this hand throttle stuff all about? i saw a bezel with it but dont understand.

Sorry no pic, but it attached to a bracket that is clamped onto the pedal rod on the engine side of the firewall.

It is a way of setting and maintaining a higher engine rpm without having to put your foot on the pedal. The cable/knob mechanism as detents in it to allow for several setting that can be fine-tuned to some degree.

Why, you ask? To operate PTO's and/or engine driven hydraulics without having to be in the cab or in instances where you can't conveniently do it via the foot pedal. Think of applications like plows, winches, dump bodies, etc. It is not a poor man's cruise control

I've got the piece that bolts to the rod on the engine side, it seems like there should be some kind of clamp that secures the cable to the firewall to eliminate slop?

Hand throttles were an option, although mostly used on the larger trucks, to increase idle speeds or operate a PTO.

Like stated above, the hand throttle is commonly used to keep rpm's up while using a PTO accessory.

Here are two pics showing how it is attached to the throttle arm.

I have a 71 blazer 4X4 with the throttle option but mine does not go thru the firewall mine attaches to the gas pedal itself.

Mine didn't even go thru the firewall. It attached right ot a bracket on the pedal. You would pull it out a couple clicks and it would pull the pedal down to where you wanted it. I took it off and sold it to a former board member to run higher rpm's for his A/C in the desert. Sure wish I wouldn't have sold it now tho It was a great Redneck cruise control :F

Taht is the 71/72 version. Change in design due to change in accellerator linkage from rod to cable.

Do you have a pic or even a description of the other side of the firewall where the cable goes through? Does it just come through the firewall or is there some kind of clamp or grommet or something else?

My dad's 72 had one. Ranch truck, we used it feeding cattle. Put the truck in 4 wheel low, 1st gear, and pulled the knob out a few clicks. Jumped in back and started throwing hay to the cows. With over a ton of hay in the back that thing would idle right along through almost anything. Snow or no snow. (Ground was usually frozen solid.) When it got real bad we would chain it up. The good old days . . .

Hand Throttle

Location through the firewall.

If you look close from the engine side you will see a dimple or nipple ( i can't remember which on the engine side) - that is the location to drill a very small hole to feed the cable through. The factory had a spring cable clamp to secure the outer housing. The location of the dimple is roughly at the top of throttle arm and slightly centered from the throttle arm. Another way to find the location from the interior is to look for a knock-out in the firewall padding (approximately 3/4inch) - the dimple is behind it. Remove the knock-out and you should see the dimple.

So that is what this bracket is/was for ? I would like to get rid of mine since it is useless except that it holds my throttle assembly in place. Is there another bracket I could use /

what is bracket

That is a 71-72 throttle bracket - the cable style. The T-400 kick-down switch mounted there and was activated when the arm came back as the trottle was stepped on. The hand throttle for 71 & 72 also mounted to the bracket on the upper corner - I believe.

My green 67 came factory with a hand throttle but I have never checked underneath to see how it is hooked up.

BobS, like Bob Moore stated, there is a metal clamp that goes through the hole in the firewall to secure the cable. No grommet at least on mine.
