Cheyenne Super tailgate handle
I wanted to get the official answer to this question. Would a 71 Cheyenne super have a chromed tailgate handle or would it have been the stainless cover. I have been looking at old posts and have seen it said both ways. I suspect that some have meant stainless cover when the said chromed.
Which is correct?

In the literature I have seen it was listed as bright handle, but have not seen a part number for a chrome unit. My '71 super has the stainless cover, but it is a late '71. Harold

Check with Dan72cst. I believe he has one. Also, check with PICKMUP.

In 1972 it was definately just the stainless steel cover. I did see an original 71 that the handle was chrome. It was probably a cost cutting measure. It had to be a lot cheaper to snap on a cover versus chroming the entire handle.

Here are a couple shots of mine. Nothing fancy, but I think a lot of them fell off because this is the only one I have ever seen.

Now that they make repo handles somebody needs to toss a sheet of stainless in the stamping die and we all can have a stainless handle that won't fall off. I love it when you can buy stainless repo parts but there is not alot available now. I know of the door sill plates stock style and now available in the bowtie style, battery trays, and of course the bed strips. We need more. Especially parts that get the paint knocked off constantly such as door latches and striker plates, tailgate latches, supports, hinges. Sorry to get off topic.

The bottom lip is very short and it doesn't take much to pop it off of there.

So nobody knows for sure if they had a chrome handle in 71? (I don't mean stainless cover, I mean factory chrome)
Jeff
