Hi Guys,
Live in Scotland where it rains ALOT.

Have a vinyl tonneau on my 72 stepside. It has sagged with age an I regularly have a mobile outdoor pool. I am considering removing this, refurbing my bed and fitting a fiberglass lid. Any recommendations? How much do these run at? I have seen some photos of Gaylords tonneaus,

Any info/pics etc appreciated.

Have a Gaylord lid on my 1970, it ran about $900.00 a couple of years ago.

I have a checkmate F/X model hard flush cover on my 72 short fleet.
you tell them the measurements and they build it to order. mine ran just under 400 for the lid and shipped from kentucky to Northern California was 90 bucks. perfect fit by the way.... and does not kill the look of the bed by hanging over the bed side.

not sure if it helps but the one i bought (havent installed) has several bows in it to help prevent the water build up...its a tekkstyle

i plan on buying a checkmate f/x, im like the low profile compared to the gaylords lid and i also like the fact its half as much

I did a post last year about becoming a checkmate dealer and wanting some feedback from guys that have them but all i got was very unhappy owners. Maybe they are better now?

I've also have a Gaylord , Great lid they run about 800-1000 ,I live close enough to them that I was able to get a factory return much cheaper.

Can't help you with the tonneau cover, mine just gets just as wet at the moment as it rains a lot here in the Pennines! Nice to see another person from this side of the Atlantic here. Whereabouts are you?

Consider a Pace Edwards retractable tonneau cover. No sag aluminum slats, even under snow. They have drain rails and collectors with hose outlets.

With retractable tonneaus, one can simply roll it back to haul something taller than the bedsides, yet lock it closed to secure items that sit lower than the bedsides. Whereas a solid, lockable cover must be removed entirely to carry items taller than the bed, or somehow tied down in a partially up position (no doubt ackwardly).

There is at least one other company that makes retractable tonneaus, but the name slips my mind.

If you must source a tonneau from the U.S., I'd expect shipping would be less with a retractable tonneau since it could be shipped in its retracted state which takes up less room than an 8 foot solid tonneau.

The Gaylord provides more security because it goes over the TG. Looks like you or a(thief) can just open the TG with the Checkmate...still looks good, though.

And I don't know if Pace Edwards makes a tonneau for stepsides. Who does make "solid" or "rigid" tonneaus for stepsides?

i thought those flush mount tonneaus have problems keeping water out? I have heard mixed reviews on checkmates covers, but i have always heard good things about gaylords lids.

There is a Pace Edwards dealer near here. Says he can't get a retractable model to fit a 68 long bed fleetside. Has something changed?

Luv, That was going to be my surprise idea in about a year and a half. Maybe from rear seat back might make it look like a roadster with a trunk?

Well that's way in the future now if I can get those replacement panels in soon.

My understanding is that the Checkmate can be custom made, therefore why can't they make a lip that secures the tailgate? ie: SnugTop, Gaylord.
They do have the option to overhang the rails, as to keep the weather elements out.

Anyone???

I've also heard good about the Gaylords and bad about the Checkmate. I plan on building my own composite, flush cover. Another thing to consider might be like the one FuelCellGuy made. He posted within the last week or two. He used VHB 3M tape to secure aluminum sheets (2 as I think he said it was cheaper) to a aluminum frame. I don't remember the thickness of the panels but with a .035" or even .050" thick plus the thickness of a thin felt/rubber seal might not be too bad. I really want a flush also but I think the sealing issue will be the deciding factor. If I can't come up with a good way to seal water out, I'll do something like that.

not offering a whole lot here but my uncle used to have a '93 with a roll top cover and it seemed to work pretty well. It did "age" a bit though; wouldn't roll open ad closed as easily after awhile.
