Wheel Dollies....How to Build? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I want to build a set of wheel dollies that I can put under my tires to help in moving the truck around as the restoration is in progress. I have seen several pictures of them on the forum, but was curious to what size castors (and type) I should buy and the measurments of the boards that some of you are using. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, will treated 2x4's be strong enough to handle the weight?

I don't know about building one, but the ones we bought weren't as easy to move as you think they would be. It takes 2 people to roll one around on these dollies. Most of the ones I have seen have about 3" casters on them. If you'd be willing to spend the cash, if you got 6" casters, or a different more industrial wheel it would probably be much easier to roll around, but would also cost lots of $$.

I checked into making these once. The cost of the casters alone was more than a set of dollies.
There are a few different styles available. Summit and Northern Tool both sell them. Northern Tool sells casters too.

I GOT A SET THRU HARBOR FREIGHT AND THEY WORKED OUT REALLY WELL! I COULD MOVE MY TRUCK SIDEWAYS BY MYSELF FAIRLY EASY. I WAS JUST UP AT THE NEW STORE THEY JUST OPENED LOCALLY AND THEY ARE ON SALE UNTIL JULY 7 OR 8 FOR UNDER $80 FOR 4 OF THEM. I DON'T THINK YOU CAN BUILD A SET FOR THAT.

Heavy steel wheel casters from Northern Tool and angle iron from Lowes.

Total about $85

Just welded the casters straight to the angle iron. Had to regrease them cause it burned it off, but they work great. Was able to swing the whole Blazer around.

Can you post an e-mail or number for Harbor Frieght. Do you have a pic of yours? I am not a welder, so I was going to use wood.....thanks for the help guys!

LSx 6.0 with BTR Stage IV, Speed Engineering Headers, 4L80e transmission w/3200 Circle-D Stall. 3.73. Posi. Purchased this truck when I was 17. I started the rebuild (or take apart) in 1993. I have drug it around all over the country in pieces. Finally back on the road in 2021. "I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. Life's been good to me so far."
