Gear install problems? ring gear spacer???

Anyone ever used a ring gear spacer to go from a 3 series carrier to a 4 seriers? Are these the same for the car as for the truck?

I have a Mr.Gasket PN #902A and when I tighten up the main cap for the carrier with my 4.11's they freeze up...

Any ideas? I put a new bearing from Napa on the pinion and installed with the old crush sleve. Then I tried to bolt the spacer and the 4.11 ring gear on my 3 series carrier and it spins well all the way up till the very last thread on the main caps like the pinion is too far back??????

I have no idea what is going on here... any help is appreciated.

The pinion may be set too deep, or you may need to space the ring gear further away from the pinion by swapping shim packs on the sides of the carrier.

exactly my thoughts. but I've just never had a set of gears physically lock up from improper lash or pinion depth... Would definatly think they would whine but not this?

I'd imagine you have way too little lash. Try spacing the ring further from the pinion. Then, once you get it to turn freely, run the pattern to check pinion depth.

I would take a spacer out of the drivers side and try again, Richmond Gear might have a site on setting up gears. I found this site helpfull also http://vernco.com/id199.htm

Smile

Adapter rings can produce more run out in your gear so the mesh will vary more. Tx Firefighter's suggestion is a good one.

Sounds good guys. Is it possible to buy shims from a local auto parts store or is that special order only?
Thanks.
