72 front axle u joint

I have a 72 front axle with the original small u joint axle shafts. I think they are 1 1/16 .. I want to put the bigger style axle shaft , i think the u joint is 1 1/8, into my 72 housing. I did it before, but the shaft that i bought was already out and they didn't know what year it was from. Does anybody know what years fit? Does it have to be from a dana 44 ? Mine is a dana 44 1/2 ton.
Thanks,
Randy

For the most part any D44 73+ axel shafts will work. D44s are 30 spline and I belive GM 10bolt fronts are 28spline.
I have heard of some first gens needing differnt spindals to make it work. On my 72 K5 it was a simple as pulling the old axels out and slidding in the bigger 297x ujointed shafts. I now run Warn CrmMolly shafts in mine.
Good luck
Burt

73 up dana 44 shafts will work but you need the 73 up spindles and hubs to go with the conversion....

I used parts from a 78 K5 parts truck i had and did the upgrade on my father in laws 71 K5 last spring...

Not only do you get the bigger u-joints...you get a pair of hubs that seal out water...

No, if your rig had the smaller spindals your spindal would not have slid over the axel shaft(spindal bearring size). My 72 didn't need a spindal swap either but my buddy Ryan with a 72 did. My k5 is a late production 72 so maby GM started using 'same size' spindals in late 72 and up??? I Duno
