The stock color and options are not part of the VIN number. Neither is engine information (other than I6 or V8).

Post the first 6 of your VIN, or first 7 if it's a '72 and we'll be able to pick it apart for you.

Your paint and stuff should be listed in your glove box...if no one has removed the sticker anyways.

Great link for Chevys, I still haven't found a decent one for GM's. Is there ANY rhyme or reason to GM VIN's? Just for kicks I threw in my VIN number and got a 1964 1/2 ton, lol.

What do you need to know about the GMC vin?
If you have an owners amnual, most of it is in there.
Post it...at least most of it if you are hypersensitive about that.

No probs, I checked it at GMCPaul's site and part of it still doesn't make sense.

CE134-1Z58128

C= 2WD
E= V8
1= 1/2 ton

From there it doesn't work going by Paul's GMC Vin decode system. I'm pretty sure the truck was built in Oshawa, Ont. (1 just before Z?) and the last 5 numbers are just assembly line prod. number. But the rest in the middle is kinda mixed up, would 34 = fleet side pickup? And what about the "Z"? That indicates built in Fremont. I'm just looking for a sure-fire recipe
for all GM's. But it seems they can end up going a few different ways.

In 1970 and 1971 GMC did things a little different.

You pretty much figured it out though.

CE1 = most know that part.
34 did equal fleetside box.

The 1 meant Oshawa
The Z meant 1970.

So its a Conventionalk Cab GMC, Eight cylinder, 1/2 ton, fleetside,
Oshawa Canada Built, 1970, <latter part of serial number>.

The Z throws people sometimes, but GMC used a Z to represent 1970. They didnt want to use a zero.
IN 1971 they used a 1 where that Z position is.
