'68 Brake Pwr Booster - Bendix or Delco

Hello all,

Which brake power booster do I need for my '68 LWB 2WD C-10?

Bendix or Delco? What color was the original? Black or gold?

Thanks,
Mike

Which should be on a '68 LWB C10?

Any distinguishing marks between the two (Delco & Bendix)?

My old one is half rattlecan/half rust. Can't tell the color?

Which replacement do I need for my '68 LWB C10? Or are they interchangable?

Thanks,
Mike

They look similar but the hole pattern is different for one. The rod may be a different length also. John

All of the delcos I have seen have delco stamped on them some where near the lip where the halves join. As far as the difference I could not tell you maybe with a pic. but that may be a stab in the dark- sorry. As far as which came on what truck, it depended on the factory and who was suppling them that week??? That makes sense to me but don't know.

I was looking in my Red book when I posted the reply and they did not list the power brake option number, but that means nothing, the best way to be sure is if someone with a parts manual will check for you. The manual will be the best bet as it will give you a distinguisher between the two and you will be able to determine what you have now and what you need to replace it with. Many places sell the MC and booster together, so if you have a unit for a core, take it in and swap them out for $120 or so for rebuilt units w/ warrrenty. If you can scratch down through the paint or remove the bracket if a delco it should have some gold cadnium plating left some where if not then it is a Bendix. Other than the name don't think there is much difference in the units with the exception of the poss. of rod length mention previously. Hope this helps???

Regular Production Options Vacuum power brakes shows the option as "J70". From Cars & Parts Magazine Catalog of Chevy Truck ID Numbers 1946-1972, Page 169, left column.

Chevrolet Truck Chassis Overhaul Manual 1968, ST 134-68, Pages 5-1 through 5-5 describe special tools, removal, disasembly, cleaning, inspection, assembly, with diagrams, of Bendix Power Brakes Single Diaphram Type. Pages 5-5 through 5-10 describe same for Bendix Power Brakes Double Diaphram Type.

Chevrolet Truck Chassis Service Manual series 10-60, ST 133-68, describes Bendix power brakes on pages 5-50 through 5-55. Page 5-54 under the heading Vacuum Power Brake Units General Description, first paragraph line 4 states:"Bendix units available for 10-20-30 series for 1968 dash mounted vacuum powered cylinders are now equipped with a boss or plug for connection of trailing axle or trailer brake if owner desires, ...". I doubt Chevrolet would have mentioned it in their manuals if vacuum power brakes were not an option.

A C20 Camper Special I looked at 3 weeks ago in Daytona Beach had Bendix power brakes.

Thanks for the research!

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

This forum rocks.

Removed my booster this weekend & stripped it. Found the Bendix stamp on the booster (front side below MC). Setup is definitely factory.

Thanks again.
Mike
