Help: Starter problem
Tried to start engine today for the first time. It cranked slow then tore all the teeth off the starter. The engine is a 454 and was professional built (high compression). I shimmed the starter when I put it on. It was just a stock starter. Is the problem that I need a high torque starter or could it be something else?

HOLEY SWEET MOTHER!!!!!!
What kind of compression you have in that machine??? Actually, see if you can turn it over by hand(after removing all the plugs). I suspect something is in a cylinder that is preventing it from moving. (a dropped valve, a sideways piston, your rachet that you lost...ect) |

Have been turning engine over by hand on a regular basis (no plugs). Actually cranked engine with starter for a few revolutions just prior to installing plugs. Put plugs in, cranked engine, teeth be gone!

Do you have the right starter for your flexplate/ring gear?
