Heaviest load my K10 shortbed has ever towed...

welp, made a 3 hour roundtrip today to pickup an 82 Rx-7 for my brother, the only thing wrong with it is the right front got run into a curb and destroyed the lower a-arm but he has a parts 83 RX-7 hes robbing the parts from, its got 103k miles and the motor runs great and transmission works great, and the kid just put a 700 dollar Racing beat exhaust system including headers on it a month ago, my brother paid 800 bucks for the entire car.

The trailer weighs in at 2k lbs empty plus the weight of the car and I towed it at 70mph the whole way home except for on a couple hills with 3.42 gears and 33x12.5" tires and used about 15 gallons of fuel round trip which is a 3 hour drive, I was pleased with that. heres a picture of the rig.

way to give her a work out. I spent my weekend about two hours south of where Im staying at, putting together a bull dozer for my uncle....it has a shipping weight of 6200 pounds, plus another 500 or so for the backhoe attachement. got it all put together, and loaded onto a dual axle trailer that weighs about 2k pounds, and put all of it behind his 2001 half ton 4x4 chev. that truck was squatting...it was fun though. had to put a trailer brake system on it so that he could stop when coming down the mountain passes.

Can we say overloaded

Hes lucky he didn't get a ticket for that, that would be one hefty fine right there.

I was 5500 lbs over the weight my truck is registered for i'm sure, I only have 4k lb plates and my truck probably weighs more than that.

That looks just like the 81 rx7 my dad has. Except his has louvers on the back and a primed hood. Thanks to him hitting a deer at 80mph in it he had to replace the hood, headlights, and piece between them.

Not sure about how the UHAUL trailers are set up but I try to keep the car further back--or put it on backwards in order to limit the amount of tongue weight as they seem to pull better this way. . . .

well, it has to go all the way forward on this trailer because it uses tire straps on the front, I thought about backing it on but I don't think the car would have made it up, it spun the tires trying to go up in forward, the tongue weight didn't seem to cause any problems though, the back isn't really sagging a whole lot, my truck sits level so when the back squats at all it seems worse than it is. But putting it on backwards probably would have been a little better, but, 1st Gen RX-7s have a 50/50 weight ratio, so it probably wouldn't matter which way the car went on at that point.

NO

my friend has a nice long double axle trailer we used to haul his 66' lwb truck up to kansas city for a weekend. we first loaded it up backwards, got on the highway and anything above 60mph and the trailor and his truck(99' 1/2 ton 2wd) would sway back and forth something awful. we pulled off and loaded his 66' up forward and we were good to go. he got a ticket on the way back for going 89 in a 70 hahaha.

yes, his 99' was squating bad, but it pulled just fine

YES, I have had better luck the other way. However, there are many other variables to consider. Each situation/combination is unique so, to each his own. . .

Eric, we're not talking about your friend's trailer, or his truck for that matter. the uhaul trailers do seem to work better that way. and any car is more aerodynamic backwards than a pickup truck could ever dream of being from either direction.

with that said, a friend of mine and I hauled back another friend's Firebirds from Lafayette, IN, back here to Elkhart. i used a 92 K2500 and my uncle's trailer to pull the '94 back, and we put the '72 on a UHaul trailer behind a Jeep Grand Cherokee. didnt have any choice but to load it backwards, as loading it forward set the tongue on the ground. hell, unloaded the thing wasnt even 3' from the ground to begin with. backing the car on allowed us to keep most of the distance between the tongue and the ground, and moved the weight back far enough that the trailer handled great the whole trip.

Well, either way, my truck handled the load like it was nothing, didn't get iffy even with semis rolling by me, so it doesn't matter if its handles fine, it did cause the truck to squat a bit, but I would rather have the truck squating that risking having some sway. I hate sway.
