Any luck with aftermarket hood hinges

I am contemplating getting a set of hood hinges for my 67. My fiberglass hood fits poorly, and part of this is due to my hinges have some wear. I have seen hood hinges in catalogs such as LMC and other chevy truck parts vendors but was wondering on if they were a improvment over 30+ year old hinges or not. I would get em chromed as soon as I do a test fit so I am not concerned with EDP coatings or ease of prepping for paint. If anyone has real world info please let me know what you think of em and where you got em.

Can't help you with your question but since you have the fiberglass hood why not go with some late model hinges that would look a lot better (cleaner)? Something from a import (European/Japanese) to be more specific.

You can still get OEM hood hinges from a GM dealer. The pair I got last summer looked like they were just built, not rusting on a shelf for 30 years. You do pay for it, though. As far as chroming them -- I don't know. Wouldn't the chrome get in the way of the action of the pressed rivet pins? Can you chrome a spring without it spraying little chrome flakes all over the fender skirt whenever it flexes? I'd go with classic low gloss satin black myself.

Do not buy aftermarket hood hinges they are junk!! I learned the hard way. Every set I ever sold had to go back and replace with GM hinges. That is all I will sale now don't even offer the aftermarket ones. Tim @ Christian's Classics

Just a tip--if your old hinges are really worn where the rivits are loose, then you need to replace them. If they are just worn a bit and the back of the hood doesn't want to go down, you can adjust the hinges to fix that.
It just tickles me to death when guys say ---"Da, the back of the hood sticks up so my hinges are shot!---(were they shot before you removed the hood? Did it stick up then or just now that you loosened every bolt on the hinges???)All too often guys go buy new hinges after they had the hood off and when reinstalling it, all of a sudden the hood sticks up in the back.

First off, make sure you lube every pivot point on both hinges with oil -or sprey white litheum greese,(not wd40). Trick is to loosen all 6 hinge to fender bolts and have a buddy push up on the leading edge of the hood when it's all the way open. This forces the hinges to pivot a bit more then you can by hand and that gives the downward pressure on the rear of the hood. Works like a charm but you have to be careful not to pinch off the paint where the hood and cowl meet. May have to tweek the (front to back) hood to hinge adjustment.

Thanks for the tip Huck. I just cant get my left hood corner down. Will try your trick. I had read somewhere on the site that weak springs will cause that too. I just blasted and painted my hinges.... They seem fine to me. No slop at the pivot points.

I have had chrome hinges before and had no issues with the chrome effecting the action of the hinge and it didn't come off of the spring either. I know when hinges are worn out and when they are not. There is considerable slop at the pivot points they were that way when I put them on. I didn't have extra cash when it was time to paint the truck so I shored them up best I could and painted them. Now I am tired of the hood sticking up and was wondering if the aftermarket hinges were any good or not. I have them adjusted all the way down just as I did before I tore the truck apart with the original hood and guess what....the hood sticks up in the back just the same.

eBay Chrome Springs.

These are the ones I won on eBay! It cost me 75 dollars each with no problems or flaking. They are not aftermarket, original hinges. Go original!

Thank you Brian, I bet the 292 looks nice and clean as well! The chrome ones were a little stiff at first, after lube and a little use now they work as well as the originals which have been saved with all the original parts that have been
upgraded.
