I´m going to US in january 2005 and I am planning on buying a classic truck to take home to Sweden.
Is there any sales tax involved if I buy a truck from a person?
I have heard someone said there is no tax involved but a Swedish guy living in California told me there is 8,25% sales tax to pay every time a vehicle change owner.
Looking to buy a really nice 71-72 Cheyenne Super LWB.
Would appreciate any info on this.

Say you buy it in California, and register it in California, you will pay a 8%(give or take) use tax. When exporting it out you you will have to deal with the destination country taxes if any.

THAT IS THE EXTENT OF WHAT I KNOW ALSO, SOME STATES HAVE BETTER
SALES TAX THAN OTHERS, HOWEVER LIKE HE SAID IT MAY NOT APPLY 2 U.

SC is 5% when you buy a vehicle, then you have to pay a yearly property tax every year.... BOOOOOOOO!!! My 67 is only $16.79 per year but any vehicle that is fairly new can range from $400 to $800 per year until it gets old....it goes down every year.

In Calif ,the tax will varie by County/ City .LA 8.25%

Usually when you buy a used vehicle from a private party , the buyer will pay sales tax when they register the vehicle .So if you just take it home and register it their you only pay what you would at home .
If you buy the vehicle at a Used or New car lot they will collect the sales tax.

68 50th, I buy and ship cars to Italy and pay no sales tax in the States. Have the title signed over to you, take a bill of sale with you and have it signed by the seller and you in front of a Notary Republic. Walk into any bank (preferably the seller's) and there are Notary Republics at every desk and most will glady notarize for free if the seller is a member. I usually slip them a $20 or $50 as I might use them for other documents as well or again in the future. In Texas they will notarize you butt if you pay them!!!

You only pay sales tax if you register the vehicle in the state. For example, if you buy a truck in Texas and live in Oklahoma, you pay tax to Oklahoma when you transfer the title and tag from Texas. Never pay the state you don't live in.

Just make up a bill of sale that has all the vehicle information, maybe do it in English and Swedish, I do mine in English/Italian because not many English speakers here in customs. Don't see that as a problem in Sweden. When the vehicle arrives in Europe you pay import tax and duties based upon the bill of sale. Not sure what Sweden's import taxes are. They are 20% here in Italy and 10% more in Duty Tax because it comes from outside of the EC (European Community) and trucks are taxed even higher, 30% + 10%. So, an old truck is probaly worth maybe $800.00, or maybe a $1,000. You pay tax on that if you know what I mean...Just tell the seller to put the price you want and tell him you will never see him again. I have had no problems.

No sales tax in Oregon. Registration is about $45 every 2 years as well.

i live in marion, ark, just accross the river and i now know why there's so many problems with the finances w/ that state. I mean there getting rid of state-funded healthcare for peet's sake. sorry to get o/t. but my .o2

I pay 8.2 in SW Washington because of added city tax.

It´s very useful for me to know.

I know pretty much what the taxes are to take a vehicle in to Sweden but I didn´t know so much about the tax rules in all the states in US.

I´m pretty sure the import tax I will have to pay in Sweden is 12% on the total of prize for the truck (or bill of sale, I know what you mean crustysarge) plus shipping cost($1,200-1,500) plus shipping insurance($150).
And then there is some fees to pay for inspection and registration in Sweden, about $800.

Normally the import tax is 25% for cars plus 10-12% extra for a pickup but if the vehicle (car or truck) is 30 years or older and in original condition the tax is reduced to 12%.
And another good thing is you don´t have to pay any yearly road tax at all in Sweden if the vehicle is over 30 years.

For vehicles from another EC country to Sweden there is no import tax at all. I imported a 1980 Camaro Z28 from Germany some years ago and I didn´t have to pay import tax, only the inspection/registration fees.

Strictly old stuff. Italy has a hard time understanding it is part of the EU. I know the northern countries are much better at it.

Yeah, you would only have to pay sales tax charges (charges vary state to state) to the state that you have it registered in if you are buying from a private owner. If you are buying from a dealership of some sort they will charge you some kinda sales tax at the time of purchase, i assume. In your case I guess your in luck but how much in charges are you going to have to pay to get that thing back to Sweden.

OK, I haven´t heard so much about American classic cars in Italy and maybe there isn´t so many in your country because of the import costs.

Sales tax is 7% in Manitoba on a used vehicle if its a private sale of a used vehicle.
It is 7% provincial tax (PST) and an additional 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST) for a total of 14% if you buy from a licensed dealer or a New vehicle.

I bought my Tow truck in another province...Sakatchewan.... and he wanted both taxes..I wouldn't pay because I ssai9d it was going out of province....i ended up paying him 7% GST because he was a licensed business selling his company vehicle. I'm not sure if that was the correct thing to do but I had a schedule to keep and time was more important than the money at the time.

Buying from the United States to Canada has its own interesting scenarios. Thats another thread in its own.

Let´s say I buy a truck for $10,000 in US I guess it will be about another $5,000(give or take)for me before I have it ready for the road in Sweden.

Truck :$10,000
Shipping :$1,500
Insurance :$150-250
Import tax :$1400
Inspection/
Registration :$800-1000
And then you always have some costs on the way plus the travelling cost if you want to add that in budget.

I understand why President George Bush is trying to lower taxes. They are way too high everywhere it seems. I realize most of you are talking vehicle taxes, but they are too high too.

Even dealers cannot "force" you to pay sales tax. They will sure try hard though. Have to be stronger, ruder, and downright meaner than them. It took us hours once in Arlington at Vandergriff Chevrolet. I will never go there again. Paid cash for a 2001 Sonoma 4x4 and the whole deal took 3 days. A complete bunch of crooks there.

Aren't they all though? Don't they go through training that teaches them how to "work the customer"? I might be wrong but that's what i've heard.
