The tops of the bedsides are really strong but the lower parts are not. Standing the bed up can be where you might damage it if you put weight on the lower bedside sheet metal. The front lower corners will bend fairly easy.
Also, with 2x4's under the front the bed could be tipsy.

Is there a reason to stand it up for storage, (storage room problem)?

We built a wood frame with rails to pick up the cross rails and stored the bed outside. The frame is tipped approximately 3" to insure no standing water in the bed floor.

Although it can be done I would not store the bed vertically.

It's a catastrophic success.

If you block it on the edges or make a box frame,so the weight is on the edges and not in the middle and though a rope around it to the wall so it doesnt tip over on you. you should be fine.

Mine has been standing on it's nose for a year as well, the only damage inflicted was from our snowplow tapping the side.

If you want to save even more room take the bed apart. It's easy and you know you want to put shinny new stainless steel bolts in it when you put it back together.
