engine/cam/intake need advice

ok heres the story im looking to replace the cam that in my motor and maybe convert to solid lifter(should i? ) am about to install mt tunnel ram with two 450 holleys my gears are 3:73 posi i have a tci trans manual valvebody 2400rpm stall converter and heres moter specs........this was a 370 horse lt-1 stock ............

355cid
forged pistons 10.8-1 cr
eagle rods
forged crank/windage tray
GM double hump ''492'' heads
bowl port 2.08/1.60 sscomp valves
comp valve springs
custom comp pushrods (block was decked as well as heads)
comp hyd lifters
comp XE274H-10 cam gross lift .490 duration 230/236
comp double row timing chain
comp rollertiped rockers 1.5 ratio
so the new intake is the tunnel ram
have an msd pro billit w/ a 6al box
its breathen through 1 5/8 headers 3'' tube, h-pipe and 40 series flos out the side.

so the reason i wanna change the cam is that i changed the rear gear and the cam i have kinda falls off at upper rpm stops pulling at 5800 as well as i want a lopeier idle, more of a beast

i attached a pic as the moter sits now just to grab some attention to the post thanks you guys i apperiate it -kyle

Do you like the way it sounds ? or is it too loud ?
I am thinkind of using Chevelle Shortys 1 3/4 dual 3" stainless H pipe and the New Super 40's all manderal pipe.

Talk to the people at comp cams or summit and tell them what you have and where you want to get, they will help.

I love that setup. I like the leak free collecter gaskets.
I am planning on dumping my exhaust in the same spot. Oh.. and Car alarms are great fun. My 84 sets them off all the time too.

Solid lifter Cams have a faster Ramp Rate, ( the time it takes to open and close the valve) Their RPM's are usually Quicker, ( or used to be) With todays technology that may not stand true any longer, I think that's where the Roller Camscame into play. I haven't stayed on top of it.

One of my very favorite small block cams was a "Duntov 30-30" Damned fast Revving in a 327 or smaller performance motor.

Setting up a solid lifter Cam is just like setting up the Tunnel Ram, The more time you take to get it right the first time the less amount of time you're going to be working on it.

Whatever you do Use "Poly Locks".. with Green thread locker. You set the Gap with the engine totally warmed up, then lock them down.

Check Summit's catalogue and in there somewhere is a listing of the cam Durations and what RPM range that Duration will work at. It will also give you, "Slight Lope" or "Lopey Idle" I'm sure you can do a search on the net also and come up with the same thing..
A more livable with Cam will have a "Split Duration and Lift" But they're usually not as lopey.. Something I also like !!!!

I have thought about going with a Hydraulic Cam and some Rhoades Lifters. The Anti- Pump up ones. That'll help keep the Vacuum uip at lower RPM for the Power Brakes. But the cam won't lope as it Should.

In the mid to late 80's I ran a Tunnel Ram with 2 Holley 500 2 BBLS, ( yes 2 bbls) along with a Crane Fireball Cam and Kit.. In a 66 Chevelle Convertible. It got amazing Vacuum at idle for a tunnel ram. and was very Streetable and pretty decent on fuel. I was running a 350 C.I. 9:1 compression with 194 64CC heads, 4 spd.

Ron, I bet you wish you had that '66 again. I had a '66 Malibu 2 dr hardtop. Bought it new when I was a senior in high school. I loved that car and never should have sold it. I did sell it when I was in Vietnam to my brother in law. Sorry if anyone thinks I hijacked this thread. Actually I am reminiscing and I don't care.

Hey,

Just my opinion...But I think it is your heads that are hurting you the most. I know they have a bowl port and larger valves but those heads just dont flow enough on the upper RPMs. I love the GM Bowtie Phase II heads if you are wanting to stay with a GOOD iron head. Those are the best Iron heads for a bad boy street/strip motor. My buds 70 camaro with these on a 355 makes 500+ hp and will rev until the rods break.

Also, I like Comp Cams stuff but we have had real good luck with the Comp 280H cam. Just the right sound and man does it rev...And I mean rev quick! Revs faster then most motorcycles that I know of.! haha I think it is more of the combo then anything.

My buds 71 Camaro is a basic 355 motor. Check out these specs. 350 bored 30 over.
2 bolt block that has APR studs (not bolts). Stock crank, stock pink rods with ARP bolts, and Flat top TRW forged pistons. 2.02/1.60 Bowtie Phase II heads with a very basic bowl cleanup. Nothing that anyone couldnt do at their house. Eldelbrock RPM intake that has been port matched to the Bowtie heads. Holley 750 Double Pump Carb. 1 3/4" Hooker Super Comp headers with 3" exhaust with 3 chamber flowmasters. Comp 280H cam with .480" lift on exhaust and intake. 3500 rpm stall with a built Turbo 350 and a Ford 9" out back. Car weighs 3600lbs without driver and runs 7.20s all day long with a 7.10 thrown in there every so often if it doesnt spin to bad.

So it is definetly in the combo....

Here is the camaro that I was talking about. When he first bought it about 8 months ago it was running 7.40s-7.60s in the 1/8th but with some tuning on the motor and suspension it now has dipped down to the 7.10s-7.20s on the motor...

Hey,

You can get these heads bare or assembled. For the money you cant beat what these heads flow and the power that they make.

Here is a link to get you started....
