Re: swallowed a quarter last night-should i be worried?

It's wild that this thread came up at this time. There was a story on the radio a day or so ago. They were talking about an 18 month old who had swallowed a 22 round(No idea what kind of idiot leaves ammo around a toddler). The mother was a bit worried that it might cause a problem.(The next few lines are from what the DJ said,I have no idea how true it is)
The doctor told them the standard"This too shall pass."
"But just in case don't drop him."
"Oh and don't point him at anyone either."

I just thought it was a wild coincidence that this thread came up after I heard that on the radio.

Re: swallowed a quarter last night-should i be worried?

I wasn't on the board when this got started but I swallowed a Loonie in 1987 when they first came out, I was 8 years old. It didn't "pass" by itself I had to go through one unsuccessful operation at the local hospital followed by a successful one using specialized coin removal equipment at Children's hospital in Vancouver. I'm pretty sure I was the first kid in Canada to swallow a Loonie cause it happened about a week after they were introduced. (for those south of the 49th who are unfamiliar with a Loonie it replaced our Dollar bill and is about an inch in diameter)

Re: swallowed a quarter last night-should i be worried?

yeah I've still got it, it turned a funky colour from stomach acids

it's the one on the right, the one on the left is a normal loonie for comparison

Hang on to it until a transient approaches you for loose change.

That Loonie thing looks like what the US Postal Service uses for change in the stamp machines.

Re: swallowed a quarter last night-should i be worried?

My mom swallowed a nickle, dime, ish when she was a kid. They were headed for icecream and she was excited and was tossing the coin into the air, well she caught it in her mouth, and yes this too did pass!! Swallowing coins is relatively common in little ones, but adults should take care to make sure the shot glass is empty!!

Re: swallowed a quarter last night-should i be worried?

I did the same thing. I didn't go digging for the treasure so I do not know for sure if it ever passed. This was 20 years ago. Every now and then I do get a hell of a belly ache but had a sonogram to make sure my gall blader was ok and they never said a word.
