water pump problems??

would my temp. rising and falling really quickly be caused by a faulty waterpump? the reason i ask is because my water pump isnt sounding very normal and i took a stick to it and to my ear and it sounds like tis making noise inside of it.

i've got a weiand action-plus alum. long water pump.

if i need to replace it, what would be a good pump to get?

changed it along with new heater hoses. helps a little bit but not as much. i didnt drive it much last night, but i was having an oil leak on the valve cover gaskets that could have possibly ran down to the temp sender in the head. would oil on the contacts on there make the gauge read incorrectly?
