rust under the hood - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

First, hello. My luck has changed. My very first car, 27 years ago, was a two door '55 Hardtop, which has been haunting me ever since I oh so stupidly sold it! I just bought a 1969 C10 350/400. It needs some minor work done, paint etc. It is full of rust on the under side of the hood. So my question is, what is the best option to fix this? Should I find and buy a new one, or sand/prep/paint it with the rest of the body?

Welcome to the board from West Michigan!

If it is just surface rust, I would just sand it, hit it with a rust remover, clean prep and paint. If you have structural rust, you would be better off getting another hood.

Welcome to the board - I'm sick over you selling the '55 HT also...that's on my list of the top 3 desirable cars.

Surface rust is common, and like Jim says, pretty easy to deal with. But "full of rust" sounds more serious - got a pic?

And another welcome to the board. Don't sweat the 55, they're a b!tch to get cheap parts for these days.

What part of the world you in?

As for the hood, like the others said, surface rust is nothing...however, I suspect you are talking about rust holes in the hood grame...which in that case, you are better off getting another hood. I've always seen hoods go fairly cheap since they are usually in decent shape.

Thank you for the advice. Longhornman, I am in Stockton, CA. Even though the parts are pricey, I still wish I had kept her! It is very heavy surface rust, I think, so I think I will sand and paint with the rest of the truck. The nice young fella I bought it from, said the paint inside the cab was orig., but I noticed a run in the passenger door, so I don't think it is. I'ts a dark blue, with a dark blue seat. I am thinking of painting it a dark blue or dark silver. I am not an expert painter, but have painted a few motorcycles at home. They were easy, because I could take it all apart and paint them seperately. I think I'll wait 'till Spring as I have no garage, and must paint in a sealed carprort. Any suggestions on those colors?

Jimk- Your the closest board member i've met so far. I'm in Allegan, so we're not too far from eachother. What do you got for a ride? Is it nice? Maybe I will have to come see it.

I have never seen actual rot on a 67-72 hood before, but its probably better just to get a new hood, I hate patching metal, rather just throw a good solid one on, because rust always comes back

the frame work on my hood is rotting away. Really sucks since the sheet metal is straight as an arrow. I spoke to my body guy and he say "Yeah, it wouldn't be sh!t to save that hood...just drill out the 100 or so spot welds and then get another frame and spot weld it all together on the good frame."
I asked if he would do it on a customer's car and the responce was a quick and swift h*ll no.

Welcome and blast that hood since it is removeable like the bike body parts you mentioned. No chance of contaminating the cab. Unless the hood has holes or serious rot.

Welcome from PA. The paint runs in the cab were standard issue back then from the factory. Along with dents and scatches.

Thak you all for the warm welcome. Well, I guess it looks like it all comes down to time. It's become my daily driver, but I do get frequent time off from work (next in March), when I could stay off the road, and work on painting. I have seen some nice replacements for a few hundred, maybe less if I look harder, but I do like doing things myself, and as 4x4 said, it's removable

I guess it can't get that much worse in a couple months, so I will put the time in. I knew I should not have second guessed that young man. It's a good feeling when you make a business transaction, and all are happy! Then again I am not a business man. Thanks again all.

Funny thing about hoods, everyone seems to have an extra one around. Spend some time and you'll find someone like me who's got 3 in great shape but can't get rid of them, for some reason. I tried to swap with another guy for other parts. He smiled and opened his shed to show me his 3. Go figure.

I only have one extra hood, came from a GMC and has the letters on the nose. It's rotted on the underside but the outside looks awesome. I'm gonna give it a shot and see if I can save it.
