chrome oil pan
When I bought my truck I was given as a "truck warming present" a chrome oil pan. I have been told by some that they never seal well. Is that your experience or can I go with it? My current "painted" oil pan has a hairline crack in it and it needs replacing. If I can go with the chrome then do you have any special instructions to make it work well?
Thanks always for your advice!

Make sure the pan is for your year series block. I went through 3 before I found the correct one. The difference is in the curves around the bottom of the timing cover and the back of the block. There can be as much as 1" difference depending on the block/pan, with the rails sitting flush on the block. Also, consider a 1 piece rubber gasket, they have steel inserts so you can't over tighten and warp the rails and they won't leak as there are no seams when the gasket surface makes a corner. Added bonus, they are reuseable. Good luck and keep on truckin'!---Jerry

I am not proud to say I have a chrome pan. But I needed one and it was free!! Anyways, chrome usally never seal that great, and it does not dissapate heat that good either. But i will say that I am using a Fel-Pro one peice pan and it's been there for 2 years or so, and I have not has any leaks. If ya can't tell, I'm not a fan of chrome....

Sand the area where the gasket goes with 180 grit or so. The chrome is so smooth that they don't like to seal. The only thing I don't like about chrome is that it will rust down there.
