What do you guyd do to keep your aluminum intakes looking good over time? Any tricks your willing to share?

carb cleaner and a pressure washer, works for me. of course you know to cover the carb and protect the distributor.

I am having my intake powdercoated with a clear color. I hope it will keep the intake from looking dull over time.

I'd be curious to know whether the clear powdercoat will stay clear amidst the engine heat. Let us know in a year or so.

Had I an alum intake, I probably would try using Durashine.

I just used clear enamel spray paint after I bead blasted it. It works good for a year or two. I generally took my engines apart to build a new one after a year or so anyway so the time the paint lasted didn't matter to me much.

Durashine. The mfr url Durashine.com doesn't work for this dialup user. No matter. I've found Durashine at kmart, walmart, etc.

I wonder if POR15 engine enamel in aluminum would work. I suppose it would only be appropriate if you wanted to cover some unremoveable stain in the cast pits of the alum intake. Bare cast alum with no flaws is better if it's left unpainted (with pigments, that is).

I wonder if POR15's Metal Mask would work. It is UV resistent. It's not a high heat paint, but it must be rated to 500º like POR15 is. Maybe too little heat protection to be incontact with water/exhaust passages. It could and should be brushed on, preferably with a foam brush. Just wondering.

Let me look, I have a picture of a clear powdercoated intake that's been run several years. I'll find and post it. It looks pretty good still.

Picture is blurry.

Was powdercoated about 10 years ago give or take, the new owner has not cleaned it that I can tell. It would look better if he'd clean it every once in a while.

I just spray them with regular clear from the paint store - usually when i'm clearing a car or something.

POR also makes a clear finish that supposedly can be put on chrome and shiny stuff...wonder if that would work.

if i don't feel like clearing them i usually just paint them the same color as the motor.

Black will dissipate the heat quicker! When into drag racing we almost always painted them black.

powdercoat it.
I've run several powdercoated intakes...not clear, but aluminum finish or "almost chrome" they call it...with no discoloration whatsoever. Then again, I powdercoat everything...I hate cleaning polished aluminum, and powdercoating makes it so easy to clean.

Well I went with the High heat (1200f ) Then baked it for a few hours,it sure looks good now Ill let ya know in the spring how it holds up!!!! Thanks for all the input I think I will powdercoat the next one. Todd
