x-fer case help

I've recently noticed a whining sound coming from the case. Frequency increases with speed, most noticeable at speeds from 45 on up. Not loud, but I can make it louder by moving the case shifter forward or back 1/8 inch. Is this a noise I should worry about and if so, what is it? Far is I know it's never had anything done to it. 240,000 miles, NP208.

Thanks!

I know this is a dumb question to ask, but I have too.
Does it have fluid in it??
The fluid should be red Tranny fluid..

I will tell you with that many miles on it, I would start looking for another 208 to replace it. Or another type if you plan to offroad it hard.
Do you still have the auto front hubs on it. If so, the likely hood of it always turning the frontend and front drive shaft is a good possibility, and not good for that many miles.

its probly low on fluid. mine did the same thing. when i cracked the case on my last offroad trip, i tore it apart and it looked like new. i rebuilt another one and it dosent wine anymore, not sure what it was. the 208 is prone to leaking inside the slip yoke. it is hollow all the way thru and has a thin cap on the outside. they leak out if the cap. i had to weld mine to keep it from leaking. check the fluid!

Thanks for the replies. Any special tools required to rebuild, how hard is it?
