axle width

Can someone please give me a total width for a '68 12 bolt and also a '71-'72 12 bolt. Aren't the later model rears slightly wider? Thank you.

71-72 = 63 5/8" hub to hub.

by hub do you mean the outside (wheel mounting surface) of the brake drum?

The later ones are 1 inch wider on each tube, don't know measurement right off hand.

The dimensions I gave are from the axle face to axle face. I forgot that I'm running discs and I didn't have the drums on or discs for that matter. Add about 3/8"or so for the total width with the drums on.

Smile

71-72, (some 70's) 12 bolt rear ends measure 57" between backing plates.

69 and earlier, (some 70's) 12 bolt rear ends measure 56 1/2" beween backing plates.

If you compare axle measurements, the longer 71-72 style are 3/4" longer than the shorter ones.
