Good thread starter question. Only, what's going on? Where are the cool 4x4 winch mount pics? This ain't a street truckers only forum. Come on, 4x4 truckers. Show us your mounted winches.
Box-plate winch bumpers. Tube winch bumpers. Fabbed, between-the-frame rails low-mounts. Electric. PTO. Pre-runner winch bumpers. Maybe the winches cost so much they couldn't afford digicams?

Well mine is an old stand up type not a new low pro type. But here are some pic of me in the mud. It came with a warn bumper to mount it to. So all I had to do was adapt it to my frame. Took about a weekend. I am still trying to think up a good design to fabricate my own design. I like to be unique.

I have my warn 9000 mounted behind my factory bumper.
Here's a few pic's Liscense plate flips up to reveal the roller fairlead. The winch is mounted to a large "C" channel and bolted to the frame. It's works well and pretty much hidden.

I don't have a winch yet, but when I get one I will put it on a receiver plate so I can use it front or rear. I will also put a receiver on the tongue of my trailer so I can put the winch there to pull broken stuff on.

The only bad thing about a receiver mount winch is once you are stuck to the point you need the winch you cant get to the receiver. If the winch is already on the front then you probably cant get to it or it is covered in mud and you wont be able to pull it off and put it in the back if you need to. There are a lot of pros but me and murphy dont get along to good so if it can happen it will. I have a friend that uses one and his stays in the back of the truck untill he gets stuck then he is just hoping his hitch isnt buried. But that is just my opinion. Was going to go that route but decided against it. Just a thought.

BobbyK. Interesting setup. Almost stealthy. Could you post an underview pic of the cable going from the winch thru the fairlead?
Also, have you considered switching to synthetic rope? It requires a new hawse fairlead that would be a cleaner look on your bumper. It would only stick out about an inch. Then it would be truly stealthy behind the license plate that's then only an inch from the bumper. And lighter weight than your wire rope for less weight on the front suspension. So you might get a better ride with synthetic rope along with a more flush license plate/hidden fairlead. Just spending your money for ya!

4x4poet,here you go.Best shot I had.
The cable actually goes over the winch and through the fairlead, the body of the winch "butts" up against the bottom edge of the bumper. I've seen the "winch rope" and while it would had a little winch "bling" It's not really a priority at this time. Not saying it wouldn't be nice...just not at the moment. By the way....how much money do I have left in my wallet?

Heres mine, Warn 8274 8k lb winch and Warn Classic bumper.
The 8274 is the best winch you can buy hands down, it may only be rated at 8k lbs, but its pulled my truck out of anything so far. It will drag my brothers 87 Cherokee with 31x10.5's on it with all four tires locked down on asphalt

Just bought the winch, now looking for scrap plate to build it into my frontend. I was looking at these designs...
http://www.roadarmor.com/ra3/chevy_trucks.html I figure just to make a trial mock-up out of plywood or heavy cardboard & duck tape, once I get the pattern right then I'll cut, weld & grind. I sure don't have an extra thousand+ laying around just for a bumper. Something along the lines of a BIG COW-KILLER type bumper that will make milk-toast out of those lowered rice racers who dare cross my path! Last edited by Americanrider; 01-10-2005 at 04:04 AM. |

Bobbyk, thanks for the extra pic. I suppose you could switch to a hawse fairlead for use with the wire rope, but wire rope benefits more from the roller fairlead when winching at angles. Synthetic rope bends easier so it doesn't need a roller fairlead.
I see your winch is bolted to an 8-10" plate/welded-channel that is bolted to fabbed brackets coming off the frame inside its channel. For those frame brackets, did you use L-brakets/angle iron that each bolt to a bumper bracket bolt and the surrounding four bolts that reinforce the front spring hanger?

Those brakets were welded to the frame and are just 1/4" angle iron.
They do not interfer with any front end or suspension mounting points. They were just welded to a clear area on the frame. The P/O of the truck did this mod. I personnally would not have welded those tabs to the frame but would have used some grade 8 bolts instead.

I expect to model my winch install after much of your set up. I would think bolting angle iron tabs inside the frame channel to the backside of the upper spring hanger would allow the use of the bumper bracket bolt and the four little bolts that surround it for a strong mount at a location on the frame where the frame is backed by the spring hanger bracket for an effective double-thick frame mounting point. The pre-existing five holes in the frame at the spring hanger would provide drill guides for the tabs. ttt. Any other winch mount pics?
