I think the dash and guage cluster "are" modified,like most of the rest of the truck.Here goes my opinion again....I don`t like this whole checkered flag graphic fad.Obviously alot of people do.The truck would look better w/o it.I`d like to own both.They`re like beauty and the beast.

Since you mentioned it, the truck would look better without the graphics but still a sweet truck.

I have put 73-87 steering columns in a 65 and in my 67(not in there anymore) and it can be done, even without hacking the brake pedal braketry under the dash for the switches. I did one for our shop truck last spring and it looks like it came factory in it that is the 65 btw. Will see if I can get a pic sometime. It really is a easy mod if u plan it right.

i've done the 73-87 column swap on a friend's 72. it requires some column mount/bottom mount modifications under the dash as well as the cluster area. i'm thinking about doing the same thing on the gmc project, as i am planning to move the wheel closer to the dash for more driving comfort (i'm 6'2" and need all the room i can squeeze out of this cab design). as for the key in the column theft deterent, they are as easy if not easier to bust into than the dash ign. switch. i found this out in the mid 80's when i lived in Boston, MA and the wife had a 80 monte carlo. A guy showed me how easy it was for thieves to start them by using a screwdriver to peel the pot metal column open. once the column was opened up (about 10 secs) the key cyl. will literally fall out and then all is needed is the screwdriver to start the car and drive off. his chevy truck had been stolen twice for the tires/wheels and abandoned. he had 2 spare columns in his basement for the next theft and 2 broken columns for demonstration purposes. there was a reinforced collar on the market to deter this behavior, but god it was butt-ugly. i never had the monte stolen, or attempted, cuz i guess the thieves saw me take the battery out at night and lock the hood in a way that they'd never find the lock in the dark.......or i was lucky :p got the hell out of beantown soon as i could.
on a diff note, i intend to cut off the key cyl area and smooth it over for a cleaner look and only use the tilt/flasher/horn/neut. switch functions of the later column (maybe dimmer too). never done a cyl before but have modified a few column shift columns by wacking off the mount and covering up the hole for floor shift conversion.
