Does anyone know how to change the rod that goes through the firewall on a brake booster. I bought a booster for a '71. The rod has theads on the end. The one on my '70 has a loop on the end. I need to change from one to the other. Can it be done?

I think the end of the rod should unscrew and thread onto the new booster. When you take the peice off, it does not just unscrew though, it has a locknut on it.

I'm sorry, I said the wrong rod. This is the rod I need to change, the one coming out of the booster itself.

If the rod coming out of the booster is threaded it's the wrong booster, are the firewall brackets riveted on it or just 4 studs?

The brackets are 4 studs on both boosters.

I have never had the need to change that rod, but it looks like the rod is staked in place and is not meant to be removed out the back.

Maybe if you separated the booster it will come out that way.

I am curious as to why your your rod is threaded.

The rod in my old booster has an eyelet on it like in the picture above. The rod on the booster I bought just has a straight threaded rod. In order for the mounting bracket, one like in the picture above, to work I need the rod to be shorter, and for that eyelet to be on it. That's why I want to change it. Besides, I already bought the booster, I would like to use it. I got it off of ebay, I can't return it. If it ends up I have to buy another one, I suppose that'll be the way it has to be.

NEVER OPEN A BOOSTER THEY HAVE A HEAVY SPRING IN THEM AND WILL HURT YOU. You have a 73 and newer booster and it will not work without mods to the threaded rod. measure your old eyelet rod length and get a heim joint the proper length and thread it on the stud. OR if it was on ebay as a 67-72 booster i would get in touch with the guy for a refund.

Mothertruckers, I know better than to open a brake booster. I will probably do as you suggested get another eyelet and attach it to the rod that's in the booster. Also, the person on ebay did sell the booster as a 71-72 Chevy truck brake booster. I will contact him to see if I get any satisfaction. Apparently no one knows how to remove the rod, or it can't be done without taking the booster apart. Like I said, taking the booster apart is not an option.
