New 5 speed manual in Inline 6?

Has anyone put a late 90s 5 speed manual transmission in their inline 6? Any suggestions? Should I go for the 700R4 or 200 4R instead? Need input. Also, what about trans. tail length. I don't want to cut my custom driveshaft unless necessary in my lwb pickup.

BTW, the 1 piece shaft was one of the best things I have done to the truck and it works great.

Mike, I did put in a late model 96' truck 5 speed into my 72 lwb. I am running a 350crate but the process should not be too different. The biggest trick is you have to set up the hydrolic clutch and work thru the transmission support verses bell housing trans support. I believe the 5speed used is the same for the 4.3ltr and the 350 V8. It is much lighter and the 5th gear is great for gas mileage. I also have a 700R4 ready but I really like the 5speed for pulling a trailer and decelerating down a hill.

By the way, I picked up an original 6cyl tach dash last week. First one I've seen. Will probably be putting it on e-bay next week but will first try the board to see if someone want to trade ---I need a SWBed for a project I working.
If you decide to do the 5speed, let me know and I try and give you more detail. AND yes, you will probably have to resize your driveshaft!!

I'd personally go with the 5 spd over the autos. It'll allow you more selection for RPM's and speeds, to keep the 250 in it's best torque and HP ranges. I've got a '67 longstep w/ 250, I'd definately like to see pictures of yours.

Go for it, I put a 5 spd out of a 90 chev half ton and I love it, it shifts really nice, if you just have a 6 though you could have an easier time putting in a t-5 out of a s-10 or something, I believe you can even change the bellhousing to make it work with a regular clutch linkage. t-5 would probably stand up fine to a 6, but not a sb.
Good luck!

Yep, a T5 is perfect for an inline truck. If you get one out of an F-body car, be warned that you'll have tranny mount trouble. They are rotated 18 degrees (I think that's the number) and have funny mounts becouse of this.
