Muffler recommendations?

I'm putting on a new dual exhaust on my '68.

Does anyone have any recommendations for muffler brand/type? I'm looking for a good solid throaty sound.

Thanks in advance.
Mike

ARE YOU RUNNING FULL LENGTH PIPES OR TURN DOWNS

FULL LENGTH PIPES - http://www.magnaflow.com/ OR http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/cgi-bin/flowmaster

TURN DOWNS AFTER MUFFLERS - http://www.magnaflow.com/
(THE FLOWS ARE TO DAMN ANNOYING AT THE 65-85 MPH RANGE)

JMHO

Excuse my ignorance, but what are 'Turn Downs'?

I'm running headers with the duals routed below the xmission x-member and out the rear.

Do you recommend any specific model of Flowmaster or Magnaflow?

Thanks,
Mike

SORRY MIKE, I USED TO WORK AT A MUFFLER AND BRAKE PART TIME ON
THE SIDE, YOU GET USED TO THE LINGO AND FORGET TO EXPLAIN, WHEN
SOMEONE ASKES FOR "TURNDOWNS" IT IS BASICALLY LIKE PUTTING A TIP
"ANGLED OR TURNED" RIGHT AFTER THE MUFFLER, IN OTHER WORDS THEY
ARE NOT RUNNING TAIL PIPES, IT DEAD ENDS RIGHT AFTER THE MUFFLERS.

MOST SHOPS DO NOT CARRY ALL OF THE MODELS YOU SEE ON THEIR
WEBSITES DUE TO COST, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND STAINLESS MUFFLERS
IF IT IS ON A RESTO OR SHOW TRUCK, REGULAR STUFF FOR CRUISERS,
OF COURSE STAINLESS IS MORE, JMHO, BUT IF RUNNING ALL THE WAY
OUT TO THE MUFFLER I WOULDN'T USE FLOWS, DON'T GET ME WRONG,
THEY SOUND AWESOME, BUT THEY CREATE AN INTERIOR HUM, KINDA
LIKE A PRESSURE TYPE RATTLE IN YOUR CAB, THE MAGNAFLOW'S ARE
KINDA NEWER ON THE MARKET THAN FLOWS, BUT I REALLY PREFER EM,
ALSO WHEN YOU GET READY TO DO IT, HAVE THEM PUT IT ON THE
RACK, CUT OFF THE OLD, AND THEN HOLD THE NEW ONES UP THERE
WHILE SOMONE CRANKS YOUR TRUCK, THEY CAN RAP SHOP TOWELS
AROUND THE INLET AREA FOR A TEMPORARY SOUND CHECK, HAVE
THEM TRY SEVERAL TYPES AND SEE WHAT YOU LIKE, MY BUDDY IS
IN THE BUISNESS AND CARRIES ALL OF THESE, FUNNY PART IS THAT
THEY ALL COST THE SAME AMOUNT WHEN HE PRICES HIS DUAL JOBS

FLOWMASTER
MAGNAFLOW
RAVEN
FLOWSOUND
DYNOMAX
BORLA
THRUSH

HOPE THIS HELPS

Turn downs are where the end of the pipe in back is turned down blowing exhaust towards the ground.

I have 40 series 2 chamber flowmasters dumped (turn downs) before the rear end. it's throaty but LUV2XCLR8 is right. At highway speeds they do tend to get annoying to most people. my opinion, I love to hear them roar.

I've got regular old glasspacks on mine from JC Whitney. Mine are 3in core and I've got 3in pipe all the way from just in front of the trans cossmember to the back. They exit out the sides behind the rear wheels.
I wouldn't trade the way it sounds for 10 sets of Flowmasters. Don't get me wrong I like the sound of the Flows just as well as the next gearhead but I like my glasspacks better! Flows are to spendy for a driver/work truck, (to me), anyway.
The last exhaust I had on it had the same mufflers only 2-1/2in core and 2-1/2in pipe and lasted almost 10 years.

the only down side to having turn downs is that in trafic you tend so get more exaust in the truck. but hey thats how you know if it is running rich. as far as what kind of muffler you run get one you like the sound of. I prefer flows, and have found that most of the "chamberd" muflers sound close to the same. I am sorry if I afend but glass packs are junk, they will actualy rob power and to me sound cheap. but there again it is what you like the sound of.

hooker aerochambers are another great muffler. they sound different than flowmasters and are very mellow at cruising speeds. at wide open they sound great. i've got a pair on the 68 and love 'em.

I love the sound of my 3" 1 chamber Flows dumped. Took them off the racecar Borla has a great raspy sound also. The question is how loud do you want it or not ??

I have dual 40 series Flowmaster's and have no kind of "bad hum" in the cab. I also have dual 18" Sivertone stainless exhaust tips which further tune the sound of the Flowmasters. The sound is a product of an exhaust system, not just the muffler. I have Hooker headers which start the process. Alot of people think that you can get the sound you want just with a certain type of muffler. Think of it as a system. Its a product of engine air flow, header choice, exhaust pipe size, muffler choice and exhaust tip choice. All of these can result in a different sound. Go to a quality custom exhaust shop in your area and tell them what you just said about how you want it to sound. By manipulating the variables listed, you can create any type of sound and exhaust flow you want without the negative aspects which were mentioned earlier in the post. Good luck and have fun, thats what its all about!

What about Delta Flow Series? Or DynoMax Super Turbo?

I agree totally...As a matter of fact my truck has a complete different sound on the right side as compared to the left side. You wouldn't know its the same system from one side to the other. The right side has 2 extra bends in the pipe, (to clear the transfer case), than the left side. Those two bends make a world of difference.
My old exhaust, (2-1/2in muffler core and pipe), had the same sound differences but was slightly quieter and sounded approximatly the same with anything from a 305 to the 396 blowing through it.

I've had Flowmasters and on my current project I went with Hooker Aerochambers. They're cheaper than Flowmasters, have good construction, insulated, and have a straight through design. Haven't heard them yet though, still wrenching on the truck.

I got hooker headers with dynomax super turbo mufflers. The just stop about a foot maybe a half a foot behind the cab. out side the truck they sound awsome but inside the truck that is a different story. You can't talk but that is not really a bad thing. but it does get anyoning. hooker headers rule

I like the sound of glasspacks better, they've got that awesome 50's hotrod sound.
