My wifes longhorn (herlonghorn71)truck is a Big-block truck according to GM of Canada's vinatage veichle services.The glove box is marked as a 396 truck.The paper work says it is a 400cid-300 hp engine?The truck is a 3 owner truck.my wife been the thrid owner,her dad the 2 owner,and a family friend bought it new.looking at the truck it has the high hump auto floor,dana rear end,big block motor stands,the big block power-steering pump in it,350 badges on the fenders and a 71 350 under the hood?We talked with the orignal owner and he said it was a 350 truck when he bought it new.So the engine must have been swaped when the truck frist got to the dealer ship when it was new.My question is what do you think the reason for this would be?Could it have been a mistake on the assembly line?

That sure sounds strange. My thought would be to do some more research on the vehicle. For instance look at the passengers side floor from the outside to see if there is a heat shield there or if there are holes where it mounted. Also, I believe the exhaust hangers were different on a big block truck. I would suspect it was built as a big block truck and someone had it changed over.

Let us know what you find.

mistakes like that can happen...my longhyorn it looks like the cab was dropped or something and they installed the next cab on the assembly line. The VIN on the cab and the frame are off by one number.
Your canadian packet should tell the original owner's name...might be able to track him down maybe?
He may have said I'll take that truck but I don't want that gas guzzler under the hood.

I'd check to cab vin and the frame vin to see if they match up.

Look at the rivets on the cab too..see if there original rosette type.

GM vintage service Canada only list the name of the person requesting the vin search...not who originally bought it..only original info is the original dealership that ordered it or was sent it. You may contact them...but with all the privacy politics in Canada, I doubt you'd get an answer.

my 77 Silverado is marked for a 350, vin says 350, it was my grandfathers truck, he bought it new and just drove it and bondoed never changed the motor or anything. Anyways I was doing a cam swap in the motor one day and discovered that it is actually a 400 small block (found out after I had the wrong parts from the autoparts store

) score 1 for me. I always knew there was something odd with that small block cuz it went better then any other 350. I wonder whos mistake that was at the factory?

yes the rivits in the door vin tag are the orignals.I can not rember where the vin is marked on the frame.We are restoring the truck so we are wondering if it is worth the trouble to find the 402 for it or leave it as it is.what is your opinion?

Numbers are on top of the dvr side frame rail just to the rear of the steering gear box.
I would go for the 402. If you were to try and document the 350 instalation, you'd never get far, so everyone would tell you it is wrong.

Does the truck still have a BB fan shroud and such too. Cab have that BB exhaust heat shield.
