Think i should sell?

I had a buddy offer me $800 cash plus a decent running '86 305 for the motor in my truck. It is a pretty nice 350, about 35000 miles on a full rebuild, bored .060" over, flattops, RV-cam, 186 double-hump heads with only 10000 miles on them, hardened valve seats, 2.02/1.60 SS, pocket porting, hardened pushrods, screw-in-studs, guideplates, Edlebrock intake, 1406 carb, and a HEI distributor.

The truck isn't lisenced or insured and i drive it maybe 10 miles a month hauling around firewood on our farm and such so i don't need a 300hp engine under the hood. A 305 would be fine. But then again i don't really need the money, but i could defenitly find a use for it or always put it in the bank. 300 horsepower is nice though at times. I'm thinking i'll sell right now, but won't have the time to swap motors for awhile. Any thoughts?

if all you're doing is putting around a farm, to me it's a no brainer, I'd sell it in a heartbeat. Who coudn't use an extra $800.

If, as you said, you don't need the money...enjoy the engine you have.

Lucas, I wouldn't do it. Trust me, a stock low compression 305 motor will be a dog and you will regret it. If you really don't use the truck, just sell the whole truck with your 350 for more money. If the body on your truck is nice I would just keep it because alot of times the value can depend on the condition.

The body is pretty crappy....cab has rust above the windshield and rear window, rockers, floors, ect. Front clip is also bad, hood has hail damage, both fenders have rust in the lower cups, bed floor is starting rust through, driver's door is peeled back, and one bedside is dented beyond repair without a few gallons of bondo. Infact the only good body panels on it is the passenger side door which is excellent, the driver's bedside which is also excellent, and the tailgate is pretty good.

I'm starting to think i'd like to keep the motor though, being that is is the best part about the truck. I really don't want to sell the whole truck because as it is i couldn't get much out of it because it isn't road worthy and the rearend howls pretty bad. Plus i'm kind of attached to it. I dunno, i guess i should proably look at my finances a little more before i decide if i could use the money or not.

building another engine like the one you speak of would cost a lot more than $800. keep your engine and take care of it. if you do you will be able to rebuild it at a later date with new berrings and the other non reusable items for well under $400, which when you think about it it's not a bad price to pay for a fresh 300hp motor.

ondrew
p.s. if all else fails and you get yourself in a bind for cash, sell the truck and keep the engine.

I agree too..keep the engine. Not worth the time to do a swap.
