popping noise
I unbolted my exhaust yester day so it was running with just the maniflods. It was pretty loud but when I reved it up after I let off the gas it starter making a popping noise like it was back firing.Would this have something to do with the carburator or maybe the timing?

Does it pop with the exhaust on? I've always been told a motor needs a certain amount of "backpressure" to run right and taking off the pipes reduces that. Just what I've heard. I remember when I was a kid in NY that a lot of mufflers rusted and fell off cars and I seem to remember they "popped" under deceleration. I have no idea if it is true. But if it pops with the exhaust on then I would definately check the timing and carb adjustments. You didn't give much info to go on. Does it run bad, or idle high or low, power loss....etc???

They all do that when you're running straight manifolds.
