LT1 air conditioner hitting the frame

I know about new relocation brackets from street and performance. I am tired of waiting to get enough money together to put my engine in and was just wondering how those with camaro LT1 swaps cured the problem.
I know someone on here said they cut the frame to alow clearance for the compressor.
Anyone with pics and info please help

Hey All,

Anyone else with this problem? I'm thinking about the LT1/4L60e Upgrade and would like to know as much about stuff like this as I can before I buy engine/tranny setup...............

Two years ago, I put a LT1 and 4L60E in a '70 Chevelle and I am currently putting a LS1 and 4L60E in a '72 Step Side.
Issues??????
-4L60E does not have speedo cable output. Need to modify trans.
-A/C compressor on LS1 is a clearance problem to frame. I think LT1 will be also.
-Major wiring work.
-Lots of brackets to fab. Power Train Control Module, power steering reservoir, underhood fuse box, etc.
-A floor mounted shifted is recomended. Major problems with P/N switch on column shift job.
-A/C fluid lines must be adapted. On the '72 I am using the entire '99 Z28 A/C system including all the dash mounted stuff. MAJOR rework.
-Power steering lines must be adapted.
-Modify prop shaft.
-Modify trans cross member and relocate.
-Make engine mounts. I was able to use the stock '70 Chevelle mounts by turning one upside down (A/C compressor side). The LS1 required total rebuild.

There is probably more....I am also using the Z28 tilt steering column and IP cluster....therefore I can't remember what "extra" problems I have created and what just come with the conversion.

I will say that if you are willing to do all the fab work, it makes a very nice ride. The Chevelle is awsome with just a 3.08 gear. The LS1 truck with the 3.73 gear will be a hand full. Hope this helps.

Chevyman, I think the solution is to use the Corvette brackets. My understanding is they mount the compressor up high instead of low like the CamBirds do.

I was the one who notched my frame for the compressor I strengthened it by boxing the frame in front of the compressor. I recently found a part number for an a/c delete bracket that just has a pulley. So if your not going to run a/c this is an easy alternative to cutting the frame. From the looks of it you could just heat the top of the frame and bend it slightly. I am still trying to get mine to run better. I dont think im getting enough fuel pressure. When I floor it, it pops and backfires but let off and it runs great. I'll get it right sometime...

My budget is depleted as for as vette brackets. By the time I get everything else I need for this swap, i will be a long time getting my engine in, and I don't want to take very long getting the I6 out.
Sevans327 air is not a option in Texas so I guess i need to notch the frame.
Stepside how much notch is nessary?
