Rear disk brakes
If you were to do this, whos kit would you use. If seen Blackbirds, Baer and SSBS. Has antone used any of these? Thanks, Darren

I used http://www.classicperform.com/ kit, It was simple, here is the catch, you have to replace the master cylinder and prop valve to match the system, I got the prop valve and new rear axle lines from classic perform and the master cylinder from master power brakes. You also will need brass fittings to adapt the rubber lines to metal, got from autozone, everything cost about a grand (usd) also if you are changin from manual to power you have to convert the push rod from the brake pedal.... Also have fun bleading the rear brakes.....

I've got Blackbirds kit for my 12 bolt. Truck is not on the road yet so I can't give any reviews. The kit uses 77-78 Eldorado rear discs and calipers. The only complaint I have is that they seem to stick outside (inside) of the rear wheel a bit too much. This might be taken care of once I get some wider rims on it. The good thing is that the rear discs are the same size as the front and I think they use the same pads as the front. I got the e-brake cable model and the calipers look the same as the front except for the cable lever.

If you have the wherewithall, all you need are the brackets. They should be available for purchase separately. You should be able to source everything else yourself with common componets available locally for less cost. Except, maybe, for SS braided brake lines. It's worth a price comparison. You also would better learn what comprises the kit for when you need replacement parts. IIRC, several homemade websites exist for most any GM/Dana axle disc brake conversion.
What axle are you trying to convert to discs? I might have some fun with google, yahoo, etc. for my own edification.

I have a kit that was put together this way. Selling it all off in the 73-87 parts board under Project parts for sale. Will fit 10 or 12 bolt rear

LIke 4x4 Poet said above all you need is the brackets. The rest you are going to end up paying shipping on when you could buy the stuff locally. Stuff like rotors and calipers are not light. I sourced all my ss hoses and fittings from Summit.

Does anyone have a list of parts reguired for the swap? Where would I find the brackets, Blackbirds maybe? I also need the E-brake calipers, so any help would be appreciated. I agree shipping would suck.

Best to get calipers from a wrecking yard even if you are going to buy rebuilt ones the core charge on the eldorado calipers is more than the cost of the calipers. As far as parts: bracket kit, calipers, pads, brake lines, adapters (if needed) and ebrake cables.

hey guys/gals,
since were on the subject of disk brake conversions. i'm looking for brackets that will allow me to use truck calapers i.e. same as the front. in my ideal world i would like to use 73-87 front 4x4 rotors with calapers to match. anyone have thoughts on where i can get just the brackets? thanks, ondrew |

I know the guy that makes the Blacbirds kits and have seen on on a 14bolt. The company is located in Spokane Wa and the guys down there are willing to help. PM drinks to many, he works for them.

My rear disks uses everthing from a front dana 44 except for a dounut type spacer. These are 79 axles. heres a pic of the spacer. They also used the backing plate from the 44.

There's a couple different companies macking the brackets, and all that I've seen use 3/4 ton front rotors 71 and up and 3/4 ton calipers. Or the caddy calipers. www.diy4x.com off the top of my head. I have others at home and will add to the list. Sky manufacturing is another.
