Radio Restoration: 101

I will be installing a CD player/radio in my glove box but I wanted to have a nice stock look to my dash. A friend of mine took this radio out of his '69 Chevy pickup to put in an aftermarket radio and he gave me this one for nada. As you can see in the pics it was pretty ugly. Because this radio will be used as decoration only, I didn't care if it worked or not so I took it all apart and cleaned it all up. The outer case of it had some rust which I sanded off. Once I did that the finish didn't look right so I figured since no one will see that part of it anyway, I painted it a semi-gloss gray (also to protect the bare metal to keep it from rusting again). I sent the radio bezel and two of the knobs in to be rechromed and in the meantime I did small things like repaint the dial indicator and the background and then I cleaned up the push-buttons and installed a new bulb in it. Even if it doesn't work I thought it should light up at night!
I went and picked up the radio bezel and knobs today and they look great! I carefully painted the backside of the bezel black and of course painted black inside the "GM" on the front and then assembled it. The radio looks brand new. The pictures don't do it any justice. I can't wait until the rest of the truck is this nice. Tell me what you guys think!

The bezel and the two knobs were $75. A little on the pricey side but they did a really nice job. I'm happy. So with the price of the radio (zero), chroming, spray paint and a new bulb, I'm in it about $83.

Who did you get to do the plating? I may have an AM/FM bezel and some other small chrome pieces to replate soon. They did a nice job...

I took it to a place here in Portland called "Cliff's Classic Chevrolet". He specializes in '55-'57 cars and '55-'59 pickups but also does chrome plating. Nice guy to work with too. Here's the website....

That looks great! I'm leaving my radio too, they just look too cool to replace with a boring CD player.

Looks great! Has anyone here ever had one of these converted to AM/FM? I've seen companies that will change the internals and leave the outside looking original.

Someone dropped off a truck for me to repair. It has a beautiful stock GM radio that does not work and an aftermarket cd/am/fm. Since he is selling it I think it needs an upgrade with a radio delete. I will check with him first and offer him a discount on the sheet metal work I did.

silvertongue...thanks for the heads up on the link...but this one looks much better...not as good as yours though...LOL!
