Question 67-72 GMC Info

I haven't been able to find much info specific to GMC's anywhere (like trim levels, options, Chev/GMC differences). I know production numbers aren't available (but if anybody has canadian #'s, that'd be useful info too)... I have a couple of books, but they are pretty thin on the GMC info.

There is a post in the FAQ about the Fender differences though...

Anyways, I thought I'd start a thread asking if anybody has any useful knowledge they'd care to share, and maybe good reference books, links, etc...

I`ll tell you something if you tell me where I can find a pair of SierraGrande/3500 badges.I install Alcoas top-of-the-line vinyl siding. They call it GrandeSierra. They think it`s funny I keep calling it SierraGrande,,and always correct me.Force of habit and, now, refusal to bastardize a good name(I like the mtn range, too). It`s only proper Spanish, right?

I thought the Liberty Elite was their top 058, but I'm probably wrong.

As far as GMC info. the production is supposed to be 1/3 of the total Bowtie production. I would say they have the same options offered in Chevy. Most 1/2 ton 2wd GMC trucks I'm seen have leaf spring rear suspension. I think GMC was only one to offer the 351 C.I. V-6 as well.

Yeah, because GM didn't know how people would like trailing arm thing, they put arms on Chevys, leafs on GMC but either brand could be optioned with either system.

Sierra Grande 3500 badges eh?... I wish I knew where to find some. The one in my avatar is a photoshopped 2500 emblem, as I'm looking for a set or nice ones as well... I guess nobody bothered to repro C/30 or 3500 stuff.

I know that GMC's used the 305 V6 as the base engine till '69, I believe. I know of a '67 GMC Custom that had one along with a 3-speed column shift, with the leaf spring rear, and it had the fancy top-line "custom" interior (padded door panels, cloth seat). Aparently the GMC "custom" door panels are different thant he Chevy. One has the pleats on the vertical, and the other on the horizontal.

60° V6's sound cool.

I have a '72 GMC. Two thing I know now that I didn't know when I bought it:
1. The GMC's normally had leaf springs on the rear. Chevy's had coils.
2. The GMC's have dual head lights. The chevy's had singles.

Can`t say I`m that knowledgeable on this. But some model names are:Custom,SuperCustom,Sierra,SierraGrande. Not sure what years had what models or when they stop or start.I hope to learn from your question.I think the order I listed models,is in order from lower to top of line and was that way in 71-72.Like Custom,CustomDeluxe,Cheyenne, and CheyenneSuper.67-70,I think, just had the Custom and SuperCustom.Somebody correct me if I`m wrong.

That sounds mostly right to me. I think the '67-68, the higher line was the Custom, not sure on '69-70 thought. 71-72 definately had the progression from Custom, SuperCustom, Sierra, and Sierra Grande.

'67 have one type of grill, and the only ones to have GMC in the grill, all other years on the hood. '68-70 is a secont type of grill, and 71-72 is yet another with a ridge in the crossbar, and more black painted areas.

On a couple '72 Sierra Grandes I've seen, I've noticed that the original glove box door was painted black with woodgrain, rather than body colour, which is kindof weird looking with the chrome and woodgrain instrument panel.

On a '67 Custom, the instrument bezel matched the gove box door (they both have the same flat charcoal-like colour on the face, and the edges matched the interior paint (the truck was a silver-beige inside)... This truck also had a turqoise exterior. I'm not sure if any of that is specific to GMC though.

I know that my GMC does not have a trim level. The fender badges just say "2500 V-Eight" and there is nothing listed on the gb sticker about it, either. That might be a Custom, but I have seen GMC's before with V8's, and no V8 emblem (instead a Custom).

After posting last night,it occured to me that the base model was just the series in,I think,67-69?Instead of C/10 on Chevys,GMCs would be 1500 with no "G".And then they marked it v-eight if it had one, like 69GMC said.

I don't know what the levels referred to but my 71 is a 2500 Super Custom. Only major options are 402, 4spd, posi, tach and guages, AM radio, AC and one heck of a heavy leaf spring suspension.

I think the 67s used a different emblem, not sure on that though. The 68-70 or 71 used the 1500/2500/3500 designation and the engine type, horizontal lines for the straight six, and then either V-Six or V-Eight, depending on the engine. 72s and maybe 71s used the trim level instead of engine type. I wish I had known six months ago how hard these things are to find. The auction that I bought my 68 1/2 ton at had a 3/4 ton, also with a V-6 that had the emblems. I feel pretty stupid now for letting that go, it sold for $175.

I think '67's had some wierd emblems like "GMC 910" (model #?), etc on the fenders (the regular ones anyhow), except the "Custom", which had a large vertical rectangle chrome emblem that looked like an air vent with two fakelouvers with "Custom" script in it.... and I think there was a "Camper Cruiser" option as well, but not sure if it had specific nameplates (saw one listed for sale online somewhere, but pictures were bad).

That explains why I see those badges all over the place then... Good info to know.

Oh, and the '67 Custom info I posted is US only... I don't know what they had here in Canada, I can't find any info.

Sales Brochures would sure help in this quest of information...

In past posts I have "talked" about finding books in some old books book stores that apply to our trucks and others. I have found two Shop Mechanical Manuals for 67 - 72 trucks and a 73 Chevy truck book also.
For the 67 - 72 Chevy/GMC trucks, I have scanned every page of the Engine/Mechanical and the Transmission books pertaining our trucks. I even removed the F**d pages and gave them to my Bro-n-Law. Both books included Chrysler/Dodge/IHC info as well. And the info in these books included the engine/tranny/rear end information with specs and codes stampings also.
I could try to post these pages if anyone wants these pages, there is ALOT of pages tho. Or even burn copies for those interested. Both books are the Blue Binder type notebooks. I could also post a pic of these books so you can see what I am talkin about.

Engines covered are 230", 250", 292", 305", 351", 283", 307", 327", 350", 396", 400", 402".
These books are at home and I don't remember the years covered of the books. I can look when I get home.

Anyone interested in this let me know, pm if ya want.

I could also email the pages to, not sure exactly how to have these pages posted to the site Tech Data section.
