Carb Question?????

Hey Guys! Got a question and I need your thoughts and opinions!! I am running the oringinal 283 in my 67 2wd lwb although it was bored .030 to clean up the cyls. I am still running the stock cam. I recently purchased a four barrel manifold and carb set-up. The guy I bought them from said they where from an Olds Rocket, (455 I believe?). Has best I can tell my engine requires about 600-650 cfm and I have been told the Q-jet on this set-up is about 750-800 cfm. First off is this correct?and if it is and I have to replace the carb what would you recomend? This is not intended to be a race truck I drive it everyday when the weather is good so I am looking for a dependable economical not a pain to work with 4 barrel carb!! Your thoughts please?? PS: the numbers I can find on the carb are:17068202 0628 BHR If that helps!! The first 2 in the number may be a 1 Im getting older and the eyes are the first thing to go ya know!! Any help with this would be great!!!!

Carb question

Carburetors are like anything else, everybody's got their own opinion based mostly on their past experience. A (good) Q-jet will work well on a daily driver, usually with a smooth idle and decent mileage. That manifold off a 455 Olds won't fit your 283, though.

You need to get a grasp of basic carb theory and learn what the Quadrajet is all about. There are a lot of people like you who don't understand them fully, so they claim the carbs are junk.

Any carb guy who knows how to build a Q-jet correctly and tune it will tell you it's a better carb than any of the others.

Those GM engineers knew what they were doing.

According to my book, the 17058202 Q-Jet was used on 78 cars with 350 engines in them. Pass, Malibu, Camaro, Nova and Corvette w/auto transmissions used this numbered carb.

From my experience the Q-Jet will work fine on your 283. Linkage hookup can be worked out without much trouble. One concern is the type of manifold that you need. Depending on the valve covers that you are running
you probably want to stick with the older sbc ones that have the oil filler tube in them.

The Q-Jets have small primary barrels with large vacuum operated secondaries in them and if they are properly adjusted they work very well.

Since you already have the carb, bolt it on and try it.

GM used the Q-Jets on 305's and 307's with no problems. Recently I drove a 58 Corvette with the 283 engine and Q-Jet carb and it ran great. Low speeds, high speeds, steady speeds were very smooth and the engine would scream with the carb wide open!

I think that you will be very pleased with the way it runs, (assuming the carb is good).
