what do you guys use to paint interior plastics? i would prefer something i can get local. do you use a special primer or anything? i want this to turn out good and not scratch off and look like junk, if ya know what i mean

I am pretty sure Oreillys carries SEM brand trim paint. They should be able to get you the correct primer and dye for the plastic. Just make sure the surface is clean. I usually clean it with wax and grease remover first, then use lacquer thinner and a scotchbrite pad. Go back over it with the wax and grease remover to get off what you might have scared up with the lacquer thinner, prime, and paint.

what Jonboy said is fine and way better than the methods that some people try :-( . at Auto body supply houses they do sell PLASTIC PREP & VINYL PREP that should be sprayed on first and it is available in spray bombs. There are LOTS of other 'enhancing' products including special etching/flexible primers ,but you could wind up with $300 worth of stuff that you only needed a dab of. if you plan to do door panels and a lot of other pieces like dash pad & such you should consider that. DAVE

When I took my dash to an upolstery shop to get it dyed, all they used was SEM interior paint so that's what I have used ever since.

For the "do it yourselfer" SEM is the only way to go. Like Jonboy said the key to good adhesion is clean it, clean it, and clean it again. This can't be stressed enough. Adhesion promoter is good insurance too, just make sure you follow the directions on cure time....

FWIW, I dyed all of the interior plastics in my 81 El Camino using DuPont products, and it was tough as nails. The downside is it requires spray equipment. The cleaning would be the same, though. I have had good luck with the SEM stuff as well. I did manage to get high as a kite off of the adhesion promoter. That is some noxious stuff. They really mean use in a well ventilated area....

, but I have used shoe dye.....

I have some small places on the door panel uppers just below the windows that were sun washed out---got some Shoe dye in cordovan color--(matched exactly!), and dyed away...LOOKS GREAT! I don't know how long it'll last, but it sure looks great right now........
