I saw a 71-72 GMC Sierra Custom Camper with the 6" bed extension at a Canadian Tire store two weeks ago... I'm not saying they don't exist. Nowhere on that truck did it have a Longhorn emblem though...

I have yet to see a GMC 133 inch fleet with longhorn badges...not an all original one. I have seen plenty with the longhorn script, but they were all restored.
I have seen a hand full of the 133/fleet GMC trucks with out the Custom Camper script on the door...how ever, 99% of the ones I have located, did have those badges. All chevy one ton fleet sides from 68 - 72 were longhorns, with badges and model number, and as pointed out before, any 8 foot 6 inch bed truck is a longhorn..only in C/20 and C/30. If you were to look on my longhorn site, there are quite a few one tons, and they all have the longhorn model number except the 3 instead of 2 for one ton. The only exception is Pont's GMC, his was actually a cab chassis with a dealer installed 8 1/2 foot bed...with ply wood...as original. Another oddity on his rig is the fact that there is no park position on the TH400. On my one ton/fleet, you can see in the paint where the original longhorn badges were. They fell off at one point..like many did. Well, asctually you can't see the marks anymore, becouse I installed badges directly over them. |

The one I know of has the regular Longhorn badges on the back with the Custom Camper badge on the door.

any chance at all they were added? maybe nicer looking longhorn badges than look right on the truck? The longhorn badges pitted pretty bad, seemingly worse than any of the other badges.

1972 Chevy Longhorn Custom Camper... with a camper. I like the colour. Wish they had the '72 GMC brochure... Anyhow, I'm just trying to find out if my uncle's GMC is supposed to have the CC emblems on the doors. I checked the glove box this weekend, and no CC option, so, I'm assuming it probably never had them, but someone did some work on the body before and patched up the saddle tanks cutouts and the holes for the Sierra Grande bed badges, so who knows.

Pop the door panels off and see if there are repair marks where the c/c badges would be.

I'll have to look next time I visit... taking door panels off is a pain.
BTW, doing some digging on the net, I read an article on the Jim Carter Antique Truck Parts website stating: "To draw attention to this larger pickup, the Chevrolet division included “Longhorn” die cast chrome letters secured at the rear of the sides. GMC’s designation was “Custom Camper” and these letters are on each door above the chrome handle, not on the bedsides. To make it a little confusing, GMC also used these Custom Camper emblems in the same location on their heavier 3/4 ton, 127" wheelbase pickup, with leaf springs."... The plot thickens...

Exactly... so the same info from two sources, it's gotta be right... so now, I'm thinking that the truck should probably have them... I might have to make a special door panel removal trip and get the straight scoop on what's supposed to be there.

I have a 1971 GMC 3/4 ton Custom Camper Sierra Grande that is not a longhorn, I wish it was a longhorn but it is not. This is all very confusing.

Oh I forgot, this truck also has coil springs, they are heavier than the 1972 GMC 1/2 ton I have and they also have an over load spring. The plot really thickens......

Rob, you are describing what I said in the beginign as to the Custom Camper option package...springs, sway bar, shocks and tires.

I used to have a 68 custom camper. Don't rememberwhat the emblems looked like. Dad bought a 70 C50 dumptruck and the guy gave him this truck also. Somehow he had loaded it into the dumptruck?????? So we just dumped it out when we got home. It had a wood flatbed and the PO had installed a Pontiac 400 TH400 in it. I don't remember the wheel base but it had leaf springs and the Eaton axle. I saved the TH400, grill, instrument cluster, the front swaybar and 4-core rad is in my 67 C-10. I also saved the chrome windshield and back glass trim the truck was lightblue and white on top. I'll look and see if I have the glove box.
