1/2 ton rearend options?

I am having traction problems. I have a 3.08 one leg wonder rear and a slick dirt road that is kicking its butt. What are my options to get the other wheel spinning?
Thanks, Krue

Not much you can do if you dont have the $$$$$$, I would think you have a coil spring rear end with a 1/2 tn like mine. If you find an axle you will have to ensure the track arm stud will transfer if not you will lose your pinion angle and thats not good. A couple options, 1. rebuild your axle like i did, but dont do it if you dont have the special tools to set the backlash, and if you go this route ensure you remove the unit from the truck, that will make life easy. I used Randy's ring and pionion and his shop will make sure your prepared, but cost me about 700 to do it, mind you i replaced the carrier and everything in the axle, if you like the 308's you may not have to spend that much, I also put it together so no labor cost. 2. Replace the rear end with a new or old assembly, this can go either way but always remember you get what you pay for and a used one may be worse than the one you got now. But ensure you have the same gear ratio, from my exp a used manual trans will make noise in all gears except 3rd or your final gear due to change of gear pattern. Automatics should be fine but going from a 308 to a 411 (example) axle could stress the clutch packs and finish the trans. If you are just getting stuck try to click the park brake a few notches and see if that actuates the other tire, some axles have that option, check the owners manual,,
Also remember if you go to a higher gear ie 308 to 373 0r 411 you will spend more in gas and put higher rpms on your engine.
Here are the tools to build it.
Shop press, dial indicator w/ magnetic base, slide hammer with attachments, regular torque wrench, inch pound torque wrench w/ adapter for socket for pinion nut, and the usual tools. Never put an impact wrench on the pinion gear yoke nut.

Another thing, my GMC (I own 2 trucks) has leaf springs and that would be an easy swap...think of the speedo clibration to if you change the axle ratio.........

I like the Eaton limited slip, (posi-traction). Although you can find used ones they usually need work so you may want to look at new ones.

Here is one source. http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/
